According to an article for AceShowBiz, Ian McKellen was speaking at a special London IMAX screening of The Lord of The Rings trilogy on Saturday, August 22, when he let the news slip. It seems the wizard does know the identity of The Hobbit's leading hairy foot, Bilbo Baggins. However, mysterious as ever, the 70 year old McKellen kept the information to himself.
Most recently, Daniel Radcliffe, title star of Harry Potter, told the wizarding news media that he wasn't interested in playing Bilbo and that he had not been approached for a part in The Hobbit. Likewise, the internet's other pick for the hobbit David Tennant, known for his roles in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Dr. Who, said rumors of his portrayal of Bilbo were simply that: internet rumors. With these two favorites out of the running, the third man rumored for the part, James McAvoy of Atonement (and for fantasy fans, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) is left standing by his lonesome. Could McAvoy be the next Bilbo Baggins? Or could all of the hot picks for The Hobbit's star be hot air and pixie dust?
Gandalf had little to say on the matter. McKellen kept his lips well sealed when asked if James McAvoy had been considered for the part. However, McKellen did confirm that he would be returning as the sagely Gandalf. Also, it has been confirmed that at least two of his co-stars will be picking up their old fantasy costumes once more. Hugo Weavings will once more be playing the elf Lord Elrond, and Andy Serkis will be reprising his role of the disturbing Gollum.
Fans won't have much longer to wait for the identity of Bilbo Baggins. Filming is set to begin in March of 2010, but McKellen said that scripts should be coming out within the month.
The upcoming Hobbit film is to be directed by Del Toro of Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth fame, with Peter Jackson as Executive Producer, and J.R.R. Tolkien's Lordof the Ring's prequel will not be a one show number. The Hobbit will be divided into two movies, the first of which will be coming to audiences winter of 2011.
