Then the holiday season is over. People feel good about fulfilling the traditional "do for others" time of year and move on with their lives. Most won't give another thought to "those in need" until the next holiday season comes around. The "season of giving" is over, their good deed for the year has been done and the needs of the world are put on a shelf. Meanwhile, the needs of the world rage on.
Where do the families that were blessed with enough to eat during the holidays find food after the heartwarming feeling of "do for others" has passed. If they were in need then, chances are they are still in need, only now they can't find enough to eat because the "season of giving" is over and no one cares if they eat the rest of the year. So the father that lost his job or the single mother struggling on her own must look at their hungry children and not have enough to take their hunger away. They surely can't wait until the next holiday season for their children to be well fed.
What happens to the children around the world that were being cared for through the increase in donations to charities during the holiday season? Over 30,000 die EVERY DAY of starvation and treatable childhood illnesses because of extreme poverty. They go without basic daily food, clean water and proper medical treatment. Mothers hold their dying children unable to do anything but watch them die. Those who try to take their children to the nearest location that hands out food, often lose children to starvation on the way or arrive there only to find out the food supply ran out and there is no hope to feed their children and save their lives.
The needs of the world are great and exist every day. The holiday season is not the only time of year people need help. They are starving to death and dying from illness by the tens of thousands every day. Hundreds of thousands live on the streets. Millions have already died nameless and faceless to the world. With desperation on their faces and tears in their eyes, the mothers of the world cry out for someone to care, but no one listens.
Let it be different this holiday season. Don't let it just be the traditional "do for others" time of year. Don't let it just be your yearly good deed. Don't let the heartwarming feeling die as the "season of giving" passes. Let it be the beginning of change. Be the one who will care every day, all year. Be the one who will make a difference. Be the one to save lives. Their lives depend on it.
Every 3 seconds a child dies. Thats 20 children every minute. If it took you 5 minutes to read this article, 100 children died during that 5 minutes.
