The Hollow Earth Theory

A Far-fetched Theory Supported by Religious Belief

V. Sanders,
Is the Earth hollow? Most people would react to that question much like they would if you asked them if the Earth were flat, but there are a lot of people out there who would argue that the question is not so silly. Ironically enough, many of the skeptics would also tell you that heaven is real, or that God does indeed exist. When basing our opinions on spiritual belief, and applying no more faith than the agnostic, we arrive , at least at the possibility that the Earth might indeed be ...hollow. What do I mean? Many religions speak to the idea that the Earth is not only hollow, but that there is a vast underworld contained within it. while the mythology varies greatly from one culture to the next, every continent has been home to such legend, and the legends themselves share such similarities that it is hard not to wonder what common truth created these myths.

If it is hard to make generalizations about any group of believers, it is doubly hard to categorize persons who believe in the theory that the Earth is hollow. There are almost as many different schools of religious belief and practice that support the idea to be fact as there are people who believe it. From New Agers, to some sects of Primitive Christians, Chinese traditional mythologists, and Hopi medicine men to UFO researchers ~there are believers everywhere.

Many of the more popularly known Hollow Earth theories are purely ridiculous. Try on this one for instance. That the poles of the Earth actually open into a vast hollow cavern, which contains an interior sun and civilization, where Adolf Hitler, plus some 200,000 or so Nazi followers fled to avoid prosecution and death. By some people's estimation they still dwell there and have come to flourish on the alien technology utilized by the natives of the inner civilization. Or, as some Nazis themselves, believed they would have escaped to the outer Earth as we all actually live on an inverted surface....don't tell NASA!

But these strange and conspiratorial theories of a hollow Earth are not the ones that this article intends to concentrate on, considering rather the more religious side of things.

Strangely enough the Tibetan Puranas speak not only of things which occur in the hollow portion of the Earth, but also to the strange idea that the openings to this hollow interior lie at the poles! It is stated in the Puranas that the interior of the earth is truly the realm of that heavenly plane we westerners call Shangri La or Shambala.

Hopi legend speaks of an underground race of reptile type humanoid creatures. This race is known as the Sheti, or snake brothers. The Naga , of India are another reptilian race of people who not only dwell in the hollow Earth but interact with above ground people from time to time.

China gives us one of the most fascinating races of people who dwell in the hollow earth. The Men In Black of modern day UFO writings seem to originate in a Chinese mythology, where they appear as a race of plain faced people, who occasionally go above ground. They are reported all over China to dress completely in black, have trouble communicating normally , and have no knowledge of everyday things. Chinese mythology gives them sort of a sinister twist, though, suggesting that they in some way manipulate the lives of us above ground dwellers of Earth.

Modern day encounters with this inner Earth realm have been quite varied, but fairly numerous. Some people even purport to have photographic evidence of vast tunnels with strange petroglyphs, as well as unusual technology that survives in the subterranean depths. Unfortunately, it seems that all who discover such entrances into this underworld seem to also be prone to a sort of amnesia that causes them to be unable to retrace their steps to prove it to the rest of us. Perhaps that in itself is ultimate proof that the hollow Earth is merely a great invention of the imagination~ of course it is true that faith is belief in something without any proof at all?
