The House of Mews: A Memphis,TN Cat Haven

Boricua
The House of Mews is a feline adoption agency located in the Cooper/ Young section of Memphis, Tennessee at 933 S. Cooper. The cat haven and gift shop have delighted passerby as the cats lie around and sun in the big picture windows. While the sight of cats being free to roam around a business and do as they please may seem strange to some, it is common place at The House of Mews.

Elain Harvey started The House of Mews after caring for abandoned cats at Goodwin's Nursery in Germantown, Tennessee. The first shelter was located at 944 S. Cooper and it opened in October of 1995.

The House of Mews does not believe in euthanizing a perfectly healthy animal. So, after a period of about two months being at The House of Mews, if a cat has not been adopted they will get the opportunity to roam around the shelter. If a cat is never adopted they will not have to spend the rest of their life caged; they will get play, explore, and have fun, just like every cat should be entitled to do.

Prior to being allowed to roam free, cats are placed in cages, roomy enough for the cats to enjoy life. Also at The House of Mews is the "Kitten Paradise". This is a large caged in area where kittens are allowed to run free. It is also large enough for people to spend some time with the kittens as they decide which one to adopt. The House of Mews also has a nursery and infirmary area for special circumstances.

Cats come to The House of Mews in various conditions. Some have been abused or abandoned. Cats come to The House of Mews with some fur, spotted fur, burns, cuts, and other injuries. Many are frightened, and at any other shelter, would probably be facing euthanasia. It is at The House of Mews that these cats learn once again what love is and have the opportunity to become a special part of people's lives. That is what really makes The House of Mews so special.

The House of Mews states that their mission is to:

Rescue, care for, and adopt homeless cats.

Educate the public on the humane treatment of cats.

Report and help stop abuse of animals.

Encourage and help raise the respect for rights of animals.

The House of Mews relies on much needed volunteers and donations.
