The HP Mini 1110NR Netbook Review

Corey Roberts
The HP Mini 1110NR is a well-designed and light weight netbook with an interesting integration of the Linux operating system. Light weight netbooks are wonderful for people who desire low maintenance solutions for chatting, checking email, viewing pictures, and watching YouTube videos.

Product Overview

Appearance plays an important role in the overall product differentiation for the HP 1110NR. The unique button layout and touchpad are the first visual aspects that people will notice. The touchpad is unlike other laptops as the buttons are placed on the sides of the netbook, instead of at the base of the machine (like most laptops). The overall construction of the netbook results in a sturdy and well-shaped design that looks great in any setting. The 1024x600 resolution offers a sharp picture, but these resolution settings are noting to marvel at. The screen size has not changed from the previous HP Mini and provides 8.9" (measured diagonally) of viewing space. An adequate amount of inputs are thoughtfully installed on either side of the HP Mini 1110nr netbook, which include: 3 USB 2.0, Ethernet port, mini-jack, and a multi-card reader. An interesting differentiation of this netbook is that the Linux operating system has been included with this version of the HP netbook, whereas most companies use the Windows XP operating system as their operating system. There are a variety of pre-installed Linux programs such as the Linux Open Office, Firefox, and chat programs (Skype). The installed software is nothing to rave about, but it provides all the basic necessities for any novice computer user's needs.

HP Mini 1110NR Specifications

Each 1110-NR comes with an Intel Atom N270 processor, which runs around 1.6 GHz and provides a adequate processing speed. The 1024 DDR2 memory provides enough speed to run most simple programs; however the RAM can be updated to a 2GB capacity if needed. The hard drive capacity is approximately 8GB, and it is advisable not to purchase this netbook for the purpose of downloading large amounts of data (i.e. high definition movies). Wireless browsing is a breeze with the built-in wireless card adapter and an Ethernet port is available for those who want to connect to a LAN network. A webcam comes standard, and will allow the user to perform webcam chats using the pre-installed Skype software. The battery life of the HP Mini 1110nr 8.9 is approximately 2.5 hours on a full-charge, which is a little on the lower side for battery life. The laptop's overall weight is approximately 2.25 lbs and many people do not notice a considerable difference when toting these netbooks around in their bags. The HP 1110 is surprisingly thin with an overall thickness of 1".

Price and Availability

The netbook is currently priced around $280 at your local internet retailer. However, even though this laptop has a lot of potential, it is better to get the HP Mini 1115NR.
