There is a squirrel
That sits on our
Back porch each day
Peering in with its
Strange brown eye,
Leering at the mayhem
That defines our lives.
Sometimes we sit as well,
The cold glass between us,
Pointing our fingers,
But the squirrel doesn't move
And I can see in its eye
That we're queer creatures
Of a self imposed zoo.

Post a CommentI missed this one too! Great poem. We had a cardinal watch us daily a couple summers back. We joked that it was a spybot for the government. Maybe it will share intelligence with your squirrel. :) Seriously, I love the idea of the "self imposed zoo". Can definitely relate. Glad to find this one!
cool! great poem... somehow i missed the notice
who "really" watching who. like the concept.
This is really good. I guess we can learn alot from animals. Sometimes I think they are the smart ones (or at least wise) and not us.
Love this! Brilliant.
As I approach the window the squirrels look at me with those beautiful, mysterious eyes, and continue to chomp the birdseed.
I often wonder what those little critters really think of us. I'm sure they find us very strange, indeed!
Love this.
We all build and live in little houses for ourselves... and some like to believe that someone greater than ourselves is watching us, as you watch the furry tailed rodent, from out a larger cosmic window.
I often wonder which of us are the "untamed"...well done!
