Mugly's, situated in the corner storefront previous occupied by The Locker Room (when it was good) and a now very defunct Cajun restaurant in Muncie's "Village" area south of the Ball State University campus, was a very pleasant surprise. Bored with the overpriced, adequate "bar" food of Scottie's across the street, we ventured into Mugly's to see what it was all about. And boy were we pleasantly surprised!

We were greeted promptly by the young lady tending the bar area and who would be our server. We both ordered a Bacon burger from the menu located on the wall (written on a chalk board with chalk) and beverages. To start, when we received our beverages (a pop and a water) our eyes just about bugged out of our heads. Mugly's serves, as might be hinted at by their name, drinks in mugs. BIG mugs. VERY BIG mugs. That certainly set the tone for the meal. Big.

Our burgers, we found out from the owner who travelled to each table checking on the food and service, were ¾ pounders and with toppings, the owner said, he believes they top out at about a full pound. He was pretty accurate. Although slightly less down that either of us prefer (they were about medium, and we prefer medium-well) the burgers were absolutely delicious. Perhaps the best I've had in town in all honesty. And the juice dripped down our arms. Let me clarify: Juice, not grease. The pile of thin fries accompanying the massive, juicy burger were lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. Unlike many places that overdo the seasoning to the point that that's all you can taste, these were seasoned perfectly. A light pepper taste that enhanced the freshness of the grease in which they were fried.

To add to the experience, we had a very pleasant discussion with the owner, learning he's from Michigan's Upper Peninsula and that they were about to launch an updated menu. On that note, we even had the privilege of taste testing one item they hope to add to the menu: A meat pizza. When we bit into it, our first response was that the thin crust was excellent. The meat combination, for me, was slightly off. I don't think chicken and ham work well together, but that's my palate I guess, because the other person in the party loved it. The sauce may draw in eaters too; it is at least as good as, though I hate to admit it since I am a big fan...at least as good as Greek's half a block away. I'm okay with them adding whatever they want to the menu. They just better not get rid of those burgers.

In all, it was one of the most delightful and interesting lunches I've had in a long time. When you consider that you get a massive mug of whatever drink you order (with perhaps the exception of alcohol; I don't know since we didn't have a beer) and juicy burgers with fast, friendly service and all it costs you is $15.00 for two people, well...that's a winner in my book.
