The Hunt for a Modest Wedding Dress

Feeling Comfortable on Your Wedding Day

Jean Marquit
Many brides today, especially those of more conservative persuasion, are interested in wearing wedding dresses that are modest. Many women prefer not to have sleeveless or backless dresses, and would instead prefer to be well-covered. The problem with this is that today's styles call for a certain amount of immodesty. It can be difficult to find a dress that is both fashionable and modest. Many brides worry that wearing a modest dress will make them look frowsy. And no one wants to look frowsy on her wedding day.

The good news is that it is possible to find modest wedding dresses (as well as modest dress styles for all of the members of your bridal party). It takes a little hunting, and sometimes some creativity, but you can get a beautiful dress that you feel comfortable in with a little persistence. The Internet can be an especially helpful tool when looking for a modest wedding dress. Sites like beautifullymodest.com, totallymodest.com and latterdaybride.com (this site is especially aimed at Mormons, but has plenty of modest options that someone of any religion can enjoy) allow you access to a variety of dresses that keep you well covered.

It is possible to take an immodest dress and turn it into a modest wedding dress, however. A lovely and beautifully designed jacket can look very modern as part of a wedding dress, and can cover up bare shoulders and back. A shawl is another option. Take a length of silk, satin or even shimmering gossamer and wrap yourself in elegance and grace for your wedding. For the more sewing-inclined, it is possible to add sleeves or a back. Hiring a seamstress to complete the alterations is also an option, but will add even more to the cost of the dress.

Finally, you can make your own wedding dress, or hire someone to do so. There are plenty of lovely and elegant patterns that you can buy and make yourself (this can also be a huge money saver!). Or, you can purchase the pattern and the material and have someone else sew it. This can also save you a great deal of money over buying from a boutique. Make sure that whoever makes your wedding dress is experienced and does good work. Your wedding dress is one thing that you want to be as perfect as possible. And with a little work and thought, your perfect wedding dress can also be perfectly modest.

I am having a horrible time finding a modest wedding dress that I really like. I am getting married inside a Catholic Church and the last thing I want is to show everyone everything god blessed me with! Has anyone else found anymore sites? I have been to all the ones listed here and many many more! I think I am going to have to go for having someone make my dress special for me = (

I always wondered about strapless wedding dresses. I would think that the LAST time I'd want to be worried about "wardrobe malfunctions" is when I'm standing up in front of my grandma, father, and pastor!
