The Hyacinth Macaw Parrot: Would You Buy a $12,000 Pet?

Jerry Robertson
The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest parrot in the world with a size of 40-42".They weigh between 2.5 - 3 pounds. Also, what really stands out is the cost to buy one of these exotic birds as a pet. In the United States, it is common to pay $7,000 -$12,000 to acquire one of these as a pet. Of course, this high price has driven the illegal trade for this wonderful Macaw. The Hyacinth Macaw is definitely the dream bird for an avid bird lover.

The plumage of the Hyacinth Macaw is predominately deep cobalt blue. The flight and tail feathers are dark grey under the surface. The bill is deeply curved and sharply pointed. You will find a golden colored eye ring on the Hyacinth Macaw.

The beak pressures can easily disassembled bars of a welded wrought iron cage. This needs to be taken into consideration or the pet owner will be spending a small fortune in replacement cages. Of course cracking coconuts is a simple task for the Hyacinth Macaw. Baby Hyacinth Macaws need to be taught at an early age not to put pressure on their owner's fingers.

Of the 2,500-5,000 Hyacinth Macaws left in the wild most are found in Brazil. In most of their range, lightly forested areas are preferred to the heavily forested areas. Unfortunately, many of these exotic birds are killed to make decorative pieces to sell to tourists.

The Hyacinth Macaw becomes mature and begins breeding when they are 7-10 years old. The female looks as the same as the male but slightly slender. The nests are in existing holes in trees and lay 1 or 2 eggs. The bad news for this beautiful parrot is that usually only the first hatchling survives. In the wild, Hyacinth Macaws live as mated pairs. The young will stay with their parents for about 6 months.

If you can afford this bird, the Hyacinth Macaw makes a great pet for the bird lover. Being one of the most laid-back and easygoing Macaws is definitely a plus. Also, they are easy to train and to be affectionate especially when done at an early age. It is even quieter than other Macaws. The call of the Hyacinth Macaw is much lower in frequency than other Macaws.

Macaws are the ultimate dream bird for the avid bird owner. The Hyacinth is perhaps the most prized Macaw due to the price and scarcity and how they do in captivity.

I think that it is a fine bird to have and the comment that said that nobody should own them i think is wrong. The only sad part of it is how much they cost and they are just so beutiful.

What is sad is these beautiful birds should not be owned by anybody. If you are truly a bird lover, you will not support the breeding and selling of this bird or any bird. They are majestic creatures that need to STAY IN THE WILD.
