The Idiot's Guide to the Meaning of Life

Randall Schoff
Are you kidding me? If you're reading this article then you're in worse shape than you can imagine. Did you really think that one of these "Idiot" books would show you the meaning of life? Though through my research, I've learned that there is one seven letter word that sums up the meaning of life. Are you ready for this monumental finding? The meaning of life is......COMFORT.

That's right. Comfort. Think about it. Everything that you do in life revolves around being comfortable. Like maybe the chair you're sitting in right now. You bought it because it was comfortable to you. Or you're in a public place reading this, and the chair you picked out looked comfortable. Maybe you had to put reading glasses on to read this...I'm sure you bought a comfortable pair. And the shoes you are wearing were bought for their comfort level. Just like every stitch of clothing on you. Maybe you just now switched to a more comfortable chair because the person next to you made you feel uncomfortable, because of their looks, smells, tattoos, race, clothes, or whatever.

Comfort. Even the caveman was always seeking comfort. Maybe by finding shelter from flesh-eating dinosaurs. Or being closer to a water source for drinking and woods for fire. All to find that desired comfort level. And today, we haven't changed that much. We're always looking for more comfort in our homes, cars, and workplaces: Remote controls for just about everything. Bigger, clearer televisions. Garage door openers. Alarm systems. Lawnmowers. Pools that clean themselves. Fancy fridges and stoves and washers and dryers. All for better comfort. Our vehicles have cruise control. Seat warmers. Talking GPS. Satellite radios. Stereo systems that sound like concert halls. Our workplaces have the same comforts of home. In the office that is...if you're digging ditches, not so much. But you're still seeking comfort even in the laborious jobs, with durable clothing, gear, breaks, proper help, unions, and more.

We even strive to make our pets more comfortable, and they seek it on their own too. I've watched my dogs move from one couch to another, looking for that "perfect" spot. Then they will scratch and turn in several circles until things are just right. Every beast on this planet is seeking comfort. It's not just survival, it's a step further than that. It's more than just eating a steak for dinner. It's having that perfectly cooked piece of filet, and eating it in the perfect atmosphere, while sitting in a perfect chair, watching that perfect program on your Tivo. We're all trying to reach that ultimate level of comfort, and maintain it for as long as possible. That, my friends, is the meaning of life. Even when we are dying, we are made as comfortable as possible. Think about it.
