The Ill Effects of Phenylketonurics [artificial Sweetners.]
Is There Really Such a Thing as Too Much?
In some ways, its benificial. A normal serving of Coke, Pepsi, or any other soft drink, hits you with a whopping 600 calories. Diet, however, contains no calories whatsoever. Obviously, in this case, Phenylalanine is your 'friend.' Almost everyone uses it, either in your ice tea, coffee, or in the form of diet soda's. Since it is so figure friendly, the switch from regular to diet can be healthy.
But is there a draw back?
Phenylalanine has been tested in labs for human consumption; with mostly safe results. But now, some new studies are bringing startling results to light.
In some early tests, Phenylalanine has caused severe retardation in lab subjects [rats.] However, it should be noted that these subjects were so unreasonably saturated with Phenyalanine, that the human equivilant would be eating a staggering 10lbs [or about five kilos] every day! This magnifies the fact that, in truth, the only safe way to go is to cut consumption. Be reasonable. Don't eat ten pounds of sweet and low a day.
Phenylalanine has also been rumored to cause bone degeneration in young children. There is no scientific evidence to support these claims, although there are many angry mothers out their blaming the diet soda's for their kids problems. Again, the key is conservation, and control. Sure, having something sweet to eat of drink is nice, especially after a nice meal. It doesn't matter if you prefer diet or regular, moderation is vital. One problem people have, [especially in the US.] is controlling portion. The average grown man or woman with a regular lifestyle, even a half paced one, doesn't need 3,000 calories a day.
But I don't eat unhealthy, you may protest. True, you may be watching what you eat, but are you watching how much you eat? The average resturant portion is actually big enough for two people to share. So why not share with a friend? This will give you an oppertunity to spend time in good company, and watch your health at the same time.
Adults should limit their portions of Everything to about the size of a deck of cards. Sounds small, right? Try it; your stomach will not eat itself.
The point is; Phenylalanine has it drawbacks, but it's ultimately up to you. Just keep your consumption down, your portions small, and remember; "YOU ARE IN CONTROL!"
