The Impact of TV

Richard Humphries
As I wake up and rub my eyes to get them focused for the day I make my way to the living room and flip on the TV. I don't bother getting dressed or showering just yet it's Saturday, I can throw down a few television shows before I start the day out. Next thing I know its 4pm the day is just about over and I haven't showered, eaten, nor have I completed any tasks. I'm now out of clean clothes and all I have to eat is a can of beans and a couple of hot dogs, not really going to feed me the next week. You know what I did though? I learned that Sketchers make shoes that tone your legs, and Skittles taste like rainbows. I didn't even know you could taste a rainbow, but I learn new things every day. Is it me or is the TV a real problem in this country? How many can relate to this Saturday story? Although this isn't a typical Saturday for me however when this day does happen I find myself asking this question: What do I talk about with my co-workers on Monday at the office? Yea I caught that new episode of Blue Bloods. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome show but not a subject of quality while at the water cooler.

The television has introduced several problems in today's society. Children don't know how to interact with their peers and high school grads don't know what customer service is. It's possible that the TV played a role in the development of human interaction with these children? People are fatter now too. Could TV have played a role there? When I was a kid, and that wasn't too long ago I'm only 30, I played sports. I was playing hockey, baseball, or football on any given day. I learned hand eye coordination, how to dispute a foot that went out of bounds, how to take it when someone talks smack, also give it back when appropriate, and how to be competitive. Oh and I used to be physically fit.

The television's main purpose is to entertain you right? Or is it to mainstream advertisements from various companies to your living room suggesting ways you can spend that minuscule paycheck you received this week from your employer that you're supposed to live on. I remember the time that advertisements would play during as specified time called commercials but now I see them pop up on the bottom of your screen while in the middle of the program taking up 1/3 of the screen. The way I see it, maybe these advertisers should buy your television for you. I'm just saying.

Television is a great escape. That is why it's so popular. It requires no real effort and it takes your mind away into a world of fantasy. Anywhere you want to go you can do so in this box from American Idol to NCIS. The fact is that you show me someone who watches TV excessively day in day out, and I'll show you someone who never wants to deal with reality. Well what can I say, happy watching.
