The Importance of College Internships

Lee Wright
As you approach your final semesters at a college or university you may wonder whether you will be able to find a job when you graduate. A slow economy and high unemployment can make the job market extremely tough for everyone, but particularly for new graduates with little or no experience. One way to make your resume stand during the job search is to successfully complete a college internship. Although many internships offer no pay or very low pay, the long-term financial benefits of securing a good job after graduation will be more than worth your time and effort.

Companies frequently post internships as a way to supplement the work of higher paid employees. An internship may include thankless tasks and very little acknowledgment of your contributions, but the experience can be invaluable. Internships provide real world employee experience that doesn't come from the more common high school or summer jobs that many college graduates list under experience on their resumes. An internship can be valuable training in how the real business or industrial world functions. In addition, any student who has successfully completed an internship has proven to future employers that they are reliable, trustworthy, and able to function in the real work world as part of a company team. An internship can provide valuable future business contacts and provide an opportunity to learn from experienced employees how to deal with common business situations and solve problems.

One of the most valuable benefits of an internship is that the company you intern for may offer you a permanent position after graduation or steer you toward unpublished opportunities you could not find elsewhere. Companies prefer to offer jobs to people who have proven themselves capable and who may require less training. Even if you do not get offered a job from the company where you interned, a recommendation written by an internship supervisor can carry a lot more weight that a standard academic recommendation.

In a tight job market, anything you can do to make your resume stand out to employers may make you more likely to receive a job offer. The experience and contacts you gain from an internship may make you a very attractive prospect to future employers. A successfully completed internship can prove your competence, trustworthiness, and ability to function in a real world setting; all qualities employers will certainly value during their search to fill a position.
