Companies frequently post internships as a way to supplement the work of higher paid employees. An internship may include thankless tasks and very little acknowledgment of your contributions, but the experience can be invaluable. Internships provide real world employee experience that doesn't come from the more common high school or summer jobs that many college graduates list under experience on their resumes. An internship can be valuable training in how the real business or industrial world functions. In addition, any student who has successfully completed an internship has proven to future employers that they are reliable, trustworthy, and able to function in the real work world as part of a company team. An internship can provide valuable future business contacts and provide an opportunity to learn from experienced employees how to deal with common business situations and solve problems.
One of the most valuable benefits of an internship is that the company you intern for may offer you a permanent position after graduation or steer you toward unpublished opportunities you could not find elsewhere. Companies prefer to offer jobs to people who have proven themselves capable and who may require less training. Even if you do not get offered a job from the company where you interned, a recommendation written by an internship supervisor can carry a lot more weight that a standard academic recommendation.
In a tight job market, anything you can do to make your resume stand out to employers may make you more likely to receive a job offer. The experience and contacts you gain from an internship may make you a very attractive prospect to future employers. A successfully completed internship can prove your competence, trustworthiness, and ability to function in a real world setting; all qualities employers will certainly value during their search to fill a position.

Great advice, my sophomore aged college dtr. is looking at finding a pre law internship after her graduation before law school.
Good advice.
I meant college, sorry.
I graduated from High School, but I am doing volunteer work for a sports organization now. Hard to find work out there with no experience in what I majored. Great article!
I agree...great article!
Having worked an internship I have to say it was a great experience and prepared me for my career choice better than the textbooks.
