The Importance of the Company We Keep

Day 10 - a Year with God

Marilyn Quinn
This subject of who we allow into our lives has been a hot topic for me lately. Myself and a family member have very different views on the subject and we have debated the issue quite a bit. I didn't really have a scriptural basis for my feelings. I just knew in my heart that you are influenced by the people you choose to have in your life and that you choose to spend your time with.

My family member doesn't have a problem being in the company of those who drink to excess, dishonor their marriage vows and generally partake in bad behavior. They argue that just because their friends are that way, doesn't mean they are that way. Because they are an adult, they think they make their own choices and are not influenced by the people they are around.

I would tend to argue that the need for positive acquaintances and Godly influences in our lives is not less important once we leave childhood. Is it any less important for adults to have friends of good character? Are we not judged by the company we keep?

Why would we not choose to be around those who uphold a higher standard in their life? Iron sharpens iron. Surely we can strive to be more, achieve more and have greater success in life if we are socializing with someone of greater moral fiber.

There have been times when I have cut someone from my life because they were not going in a direction that I chose to go. I don't wish any harm on them and I certainly hope they find their way to a better lifestyle; but I still don't have to be influenced by them or be around the bad situations they put themselves in. I want to show tolerance, but not approval.

"The one who walks with the wise will become wise, but a companion of fools will suffer harm."

Proverbs 13:20

"But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a reviler, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person."

1 Corinthians 5:11

"Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good morals." 1 Corinthians 15:33
