It is common thinking among small business owners that their size makes them safe from the security incursions of data thieves and malicious hackers. They think they may not be worth the time and effort it takes to intrude upon their data systems. Nothing can be father from the truth.
In fact, smaller businesses may be more vulnerable to electronic sabotage than are larger businesses. In the findings of a study made by research firm AMI Partners, almost half of all small and medium sized businesses have failed to implement even basic security precautions like installation of antivirus software. This complacence may be the main reason why when the MyDoom worm hit a few years back, one in three small and medium sized businesses were affected as compared to one in six larger organizations. The study was made by the Internet Security Alliance, a non-profit organization dealing with information security issues.
In today's times, due to the evolving sophistication of malicious criminals, we need network protection more than ever. Malicious hackers are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software that they use to crack even the toughest security measures. Instead of brushing it off as an additional cost, IT managers will do well to investigate plans to put data security and encryption policies in place to protect their information assets. If the inevitable were to happen, the damage done to the business may be much more than what the initial investment requires.
Keeping the cost of security breaches in mind, data security and encryption should be one of the priorities of any business that uses IT. It's not only the big companies that may be affected from an attack as the smaller organizations are just as vulnerable. A bigger business may have the resources to recover from the onslaught of a security breach. But even the survival of a small business may be in question if a data breach or identity theft were to occur.
All security software providers are now coming up with different solutions that guarantee data safety in a business. Military-grade encryption software is now available for the corporate IT manager to safeguard IT systems. Encryption technology such as RSA and DES are affordable and available. This brings computer system safety to a new higher level. It also makes it harder for malicious hackers to intrude upon vulnerable networks. Using encryption in corporate communications may be one of the highest levels of protection that a business can employ to safeguard the integrity of its data and computer networks.
