Keeping things out:
Hot tub covers keep uninvited guests out of your hot tub. You should keep your tub covered when not in use unless you really enjoy relaxing with bugs floating around you. Your cover will keep out leaves and dirt and this will reduce the maintenance and cleaning you have to do before you can use your tub. Covers also prevent rain from entering the hot tub. Rain water is not harmful by itself but too much in your hot tub can throw off your chemical balance.
Hot tubs that are not used frequently can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are just as likely to set up home in your hot tub as they are in any standing body of water. A cover will keep reduce the chances of your tub becoming a breeding ground and help lessen the overall number of mosquitoes you have to fight off during the season.
Hot tub covers are even more important for safety reasons. A heavy duty cover will keep curious children out. Small children can fall into a tub and drown just as easily as they can in any type of pool. Covered hot tubs are also less of an attraction to thirsty household pets and wild life. Even if your hot tub has an enclosure finding a mouse or other small critter having a drink before you soak is not a pleasant experience. Rodents can gain entry through very small openings.
Keeping things in:
Hot tub covers also keep things in your hot tub. Uncovered tubs will lose more water through evaporation. A covered tub will not need to be filled as frequently. Your maintenance can be reduced because your chemical balance should be more stable. Quality covers also help keep heat in. Your hot tub will reach your desired temperature faster and the less heating you need to do the less electricity your tub consumes. When the outside temperatures are reasonable you might even enjoy your tub without turning the heat on.
Good quality, heavy duty fitted hot tub covers are the best but any cover that you can secure is better than having no cover at all. When your cover becomes worn out you should replace it to prevent material from the cover from falling in and contaminating your tub. You may want to consider investing in a solar hot tub cover. Using a solar cover will save you some money on the expense of heating your tub.
