The Importance of an Emergency Fund and How to Create One

Everyone should have money set aside specifically for emergency situations. If you don't, you could be in dire trouble if there is ever a real emergency you have to deal with. This article will explain the importance of having an emergency fund, and how to create one.

Why is having an emergency fund important? Because it could literally destroy your life if you don't. If you are living paycheck to paycheck, there is no room for an emergency. Bad things can happen to anyone, at any time. An emergency can be considered as any threat to the well-being of you or your family. A loss of income, a health problem of a family member, or a fire that makes your house unlivable are all emergencies.

An emergency fund acts as a cushion to help you over the bumps of life, whether they are big or small.

How do you create an emergency fund? It's not always easy to set aside money that you really need now, especially if you are spending as much as you make already. All your funds are already allocated to your basics, like food, rent, and the other necessities of life. You have two choices-to take money from somewhere else in your budget, or to find away to create more income.

There are almost always areas where you could save more money. Do you smoke? That's an extra five bucks a day you can put towards your emergency fund. Can't stand the thought of quitting? Cut down by half, and you'll still be able to save quite a bit of money. Look at every area of your life, and figure out what you can cut out or reduce. Maybe you can rent a cheaper apartment, or use less electricity. Set these small amounts that you save aside, and DON"T touch it! Keep building your emergency fund up until you have the amount you have set for your goal.

If you've already cut your expenses down to the bone, and you simply can't cut out any more to save for your emergency fund, then you will have to get creative. You will have to find ways to make more money. Even if you can only make small amounts of extra money, every little bit helps, as long as you resist the urge to spend it. Everyone has stuff they can sell in a yard sale or on Ebay. You can sell things you make too, whether on Ebay or at a local craft fair. It's easy to make extra money on associated content writing articles. Don't have a computer? There are computers free to use at nearly every library.

There are ways to put money into your emergency fund, even for the poorest person or family. It's not only necessary, but it can give you peace of mind as well, knowing you have something to fall back on if you ever really need it.

You are so right it is very important to have an emergency fund. Even if you just throw your change in a jar everyday, at least that is something.

I'm a non-smoker so I guess I have somewhat of an advantage. =) Good job!

I love two tips a friend gave me. He puts all change in a jar and hides it away each night. Also when you walk in the spring, especially early morning, walk by the drive through window at a fast food restaurant. Money usually is somewhere around there.
