The Importance of General Education

Shawn Thomas
I believe the purpose of general education is to gain a greater knowledge in a variety of different subjects. General education classes are usually classes you are required to take to gain skills in that area. I feel that general education can help you in your major. I think General Education is to prepare you for the world for when you graduate school.

The top three reasons why I enrolled in a university was to get an education so I could get a career that I wanted. I wanted to get the college experience because a lot of people tell me college was "the best time of their life." I wanted to come to school to be more independent so I can learn what it is like to live on my own. I can't rely on my mom and dad to be their for me the rest of my life and college can teach me how to be completely independent. College will also aid me in getting a good career. If you don't go to college these days, you might not get the job you want because you don't have a college degree. By being in college, you are able to go into any career you want.

I interviewed an upper class junior. She told me the purpose of general education classes was to be more prepared for your major and for the world after college. She said that gen. eds. help you in the life skills that you will need. I also asked her why she wanted to come to college. She said the main reason was because she wanted to be a teacher and therefore decided to attend one of the best teaching schools. She also said she wanted to make lots of new friends and just get away from home and be in a new surrounding. She also wanted to go to college because she loved the school she was at.

There are many choices in college, but many agree that broadening your horizons and taking many general educations classes can be of great benefit. You can take science classes, math classes, English classes, and other classes that give you a bigger picture of some of the more basics needed in professions. This can help you be more global in scope and view. Understand the effects of different disciplines is important so that you can adapt and make the correct decisions for the job or career path that you enter.
