The Importance of a Good Nights Sleep

Kevin Nurmi
Every part of your body is working hard during the entire day. You heart never quits beating, and beats faster during your active part of the day. You stomach is always digesting the food you eat. Your lungs are always working to help you breathe. All of these parts, and more, need their rest. Your heart needs an extended period in which it can beat slower to regain its strength to keep pumping strong while you are busy running around. Your stomach needs rest between meals to replenish its supply of acid. Your lungs need to relax and move slower for a period. All of these things are accomplished while you sleep. By neglecting the amount of sleep you require, you are neglecting each and every part of your body. They will eventually get too tired and worn out to work, and begin to give you problems.

You may notice that if you are overtired, you often cannot fall asleep very easily. If you are having trouble sleeping at night, you can try some of the following ideas to calm you down and get you sleeping:

-A warm, quiet bath before going to bed can help relax your body and relieve stress, allowing you to fall asleep quicker and easier.

-A massage, mostly along the spine, can help relieve tension in your muscles and make you more comfortable which can aid you in falling asleep.

-A hot bath made for your feet can pull the blood away from the brain and effectively help put you to sleep.

-Warm milk or cocoa just before you go to sleep can also have the same calming effect to help you sleep.

-If indigestion is helping keep you awake, you may want to eat more plain foods before bed time to help prevent that.

-A firm bed with no pillow can sometimes help you fall asleep faster.

-Keep a few windows open because the fresh air can help tire you out and put you to sleep.

-Do not let your mind race with the thoughts of what happened today, or what you need to accomplish tomorrow. It can stress you out, and stimulate your mind, keeping you awake even longer.

-Count your breaths or simply count numbers. If you concentrate very hard on something that does not take much effort, you will eventually lose track of what you are doing and slip into sleep. Attempt to see the number in your mind, and give each number a few seconds to sink in.

If none of these methods work, and you continue having problems sleeping, you should contact your doctor. It is not advised to begin taking over the counter or prescription sleep aids without the consent of your doctor, because many of those have been linked to heart conditions.

As you can see, your body needs you to allow it the rest time it deserves. By not getting enough sleep you are putting your health in jeopardy, and wearing out your body. You only get one, so it is advisable to treat it well. If you are having problems falling asleep, you should try every method you can think of to help you fall asleep before resorting to any sort of medication. If you do have serious problems, and are having many sleepless nights, you should contact your health care provider. They will often perform tests to see if you have a sleep condition that requires a medical treatment. Many times your sleep problem is related to stress or some other problem that can be resolved on its own. Trying the methods above are likely to lead you to a great nights sleep.
