The Importance for Internet Writers to Keep Their Personal Info Private

Shirley A Mandel
Recently, an article on fake AC contributers, people on the website for ulterior motives, caught my eye.. Some of these people are on the site for social reasons or commercial purposes. This artical brought to my mind the avatar of a mysterious "contributer" on my fan's list.

This person is totally anonymous. He/she call's himself by a single letter and has published nothing, although this person has been on AC a long time. Neither has this person left a comment for me or anyone else that I have read on AC, and I do extensive reading. I decided to check out the individual's fan's list, and lo and behold, each person listed is either a Christian, politcal conservative, a parent who homeschools her kids or all three. There are 42 Christians in all on his list. I alerted the powers that be on AC about a possible fake contributer on the site, but they said that the person has cancelled their account with AC so there is nothing amiss here.

But I still wonder why a person would sign up for AC anonymiously, not write one single word and make a list of the Christians and conservatives on the site.

I said all that to say this: It is really important that Internet writers be proactive in keeping their personal information safe. You never know who is on the other side of that computer. Anyone of us, Christian or not, can write something offensive to someone. My advice is to have an unlisted or nonpublished phone number and address so at least a troubled person can't get your number and address from the White Pages, either on line or in the phone book. Also, have passwords that only you can possibly know so no one can easily hack into your accounts. We are writers, we are in the public eye just like celebrities, and we have posted our most private thoughts on the world-wide web for eveyone to see.

Lets not make it easy for them to show up on our doorstep. Stay safe.

Excellent article and advice. I use a pen-name for this very reason. There are so many scammers in Internet land. On the upside, I met a wonderful young man by accident through an AC article I wrote and we are now co-authoring a book. He is a known quantity, though, and I've actually seen him on TV in Australia. He is somewhat famous. However, it is always wise to qualify any contacts like this before divulging personal details. In the main, people on AC are generous, caring and friendly. This is encouraging.

I agree with you 1,000%. Some people will take something good and use it to do something bad. Thanks for your concern.

Hi Shirley. It might be a good idea to use a pen name especially for writing on AC and other internet sites. As for some of the people who do that, they may have felt the need to sign up in case they decided to leave messages. One of my friends is signed up and bless her heart, she hasn't had the time to write the first word. In high school/college she could write a five page letter in no time. I wouldn't be too concerned with someone who has a variety of people, especially if you are not using your real name. Good info though.
