The Importance of Land Conservation

Sarah Rachel
My husband and I have always loved doing things in the great outdoors like camping, fishing, and hiking. Prior to moving to Arizona in 2004, we lived in the great Northwest. We can see that both Oregon and Arizona have a lot to offer. The beautiful open spaces throughout both states are distinct. Because of our love for wilderness and animals both my husband and I realize the importance of conservation.

Conservation is important for so many reasons. If we don't take steps necessary to conserve the land we will not be able to enjoy the vivid beauty that we see in our own back yards. It is essential that we all take an active role to preserve and protect land so that the cycle of life can continue to go on, and ensure the survival of plants, animals and human beings. Right now many plants and animals are threatened with the possibility of extinction. This is especially true in other countries because of logging in the rainforest, and it can even happen here in the United States if we are not careful. Animals need wide open spaces to roam free, hunt, and feed on the grasslands. Conservation is especially important for elk and deer because these animals have made their homes all across the United States in forests and other grassland areas.

Furthermore, these open spaces of land across the world are beautiful little pieces of heaven that also fulfill a natural ecological function for plants and animals to thrive. As we know these plants and animals are meant to live out their days in these special places. Swamplands, grasslands and forests all have fragile eco-systems which make it possible for plants and animals to survive. Eco-systems give us food, clean air and clean water. When this delicate balance of life is disrupted because of development from excessive logging or building it can create problems within the environment, and if development is not kept under control through conservation efforts and re-plantation eventually human beings may also cease to exist. Logging in moderation and logging a certain way can actually be beneficial to forests. By logging old grandpa trees, and replanting new seedlings logging can help prevent forest fires and rejuvenate the forest so the key is to be balanced.

In addition, as the human population continues to increase more open space is becoming threatened. As development continues many plants and animals are being pushed even further out of their natural habitat. Balance is crucial when it comes to conservation because even though we need wood and other natural resources that the land provides we need to be careful to do it in the right manner by protecting certain areas and adhering to a balanced approach. Certain land has to be protected in order to ensure the survival of plants and animals for future generations. If all the land in the United States was covered by buildings and concrete the earth would be thrown off balance which could eventually threaten the survival of mankind.

In conclusion conservation is important because through conservation land is protected for generations to come. It is our responsibility to preserve and protect these open spaces. We as human beings are intelligent yet if we are not careful we can bring destruction upon ourselves, our children and especially our grand children. Our big blue planet is a precious unique gem suspended within the universe. We can all do our part to protect the earth by keeping certain places un touched.
