The Importance of Local Government

Mr. B
The only way to make a difference in our society today is to start out by working with your local government. My local government makes decisions that affect every person in my community and they have done so to the best of their abilities.

One of the first things that I noticed that my local government does a great job of doing is clearing the roads so that I can safely make it to school and around town. Though they do a great job there is only so much money in our fiscal budget to take care of the roads that I travel on. Our town Clerk only lets the snowplows go out and do their job when the roads are practically impassible. Even though he is putting the life of those that travel the road in danger he is still trying to perfect the citizens of my town by keeping the amount of deficit spending to a limit.

Although the things that go wrong in our national and local government system are plastered all over the media they do more then good. My local government is extremely invested in public welfare programs. One of the biggest public welfare programs that makes up over fifty percent of our spending budget is education. My local government takes a huge amount of pride in our educational system by giving us all of the tools that we need to succeed in our free market society.

Though our local government does many things correct for us they sometimes make mistakes in judgment. Lately there had been an issue about whether or not board members should be able to discuss town affairs outside of a public forum. Though the board members talked outside of a public forum they came out and told the public why they did it in the first place and did not hide anything that they said. Though they made a mistake my local government still stepped forward and admitted wrong doing without hiding anything or covering up the truth.

Without a local government our society as a whole would not be able to function. Without a local government many of the programs and services we receive would not be free. We would also not be able to make change in our government system either. We need them to represent us at a state and federal level so that our voices can be heard.
