The Importance of Mouthwash

Sally Albright
Someone was knocking at the door. Or was she still dreaming? She let out a yawn, and after smelling her breath, she knew she was awake. Looking at the clock she realized that it was still early in the morning and not at all a suitable hour for someone to be knocking. Again she heard the knocks at the door which startled her out of her confused state. Who could it be?

Remembering the horrible smell that came from her mouth she made her way to the bathroom to gargle some mouthwash. Even if it were some stranger who planned on robbing her house and tying her up she wouldn't want to be found with breath so bad it could bring down one of the cops who came to her rescue. More knocking. Wait a minute, would ya?You come knocking down my door this early in the morning and you expect an immediate response? Just who do you think you are? Oh. What if...

"One minute!" She shouted as loud as she could hoping that whoever was on the other side of the door would hear her. What if it is them? What do I do? How will I react? She looked at the mascara on the counter and thought that it might not be a good idea. At least not if it were them. She decided to go with a bit of lip gloss and to slip into a comfy pair of jeans and her favorite shirt. This would at least make her feel comfortable, even if the comfort was merely physical.

Again more knocking. This time it sounded even more urgent than the last. Whoever it is surely is persistent. It must be them. It's got to be them. Who else could it be? She reached for a few tissues on her way down the hall. Then she thought about it. She would look silly holding a handful of tissues if it weren't them. And if it were them she wouldn't care about the tissues. In fact, she wouldn't care about anything. "Just one sec, please!" She found it hard to put the please into the sentence. It was as if her breath had been sucked back down into her chest and she suddenly felt dizzy. What am I going to do? How...how will I live?

"Hello! Helloooo!" Wait. Was that? Is it? She stood against the wall trying to stabilize herself. What was she waiting for? She knew who it was. She stood tall and took a deep breath. She reached for the knob and opened the door. It was him. Standing tall and proud in his military uniform. "You look just like the way I remembered you did." She smiled as she realized the fear was over. He was back home. He was safe. As she leaned in for that long awaited kiss she had a thought. Boy am I glad I went for the mouthwash...

I enjoyed the suspense and the happy reunion. I remember what it's like being reunited after a military deployment or TDY. You want to be in tip top condition!
