The Importance of a Research Paper Abstract

Natasha Stiller
There are different types of research paper abstracts. There is the informative abstract and the descriptive abstract. An informative abstract summarizes the paper as a whole, along with the research findings. This form of abstract is a detailed summary of what will follow in your paper. The descriptive abstract identifies your papers purpose and some key findings you will explore in your paper. This is the most common abstract. For a school research paper, you will want to ensure you are including the correct abstract for your assignment.

An abstract often poses a question revolving around your topic, or might include a hypothesis on your part that you are trying to defend or refute. The abstract can help clarify your main purpose for writing the paper with the question you are posing and peak the reader's interest to continue reading on. Remember, this is the first impression of your work, so you will want to convey your purpose in an easy to understand fashion for your audience.

Consider what purpose you want your abstract to have. Do you want to introduce a problem, pose a question, introduce evidence, provide results, or focus on implications of your research? The topic of your research will largely reflect how you introduce your paper in your abstract to your audience. If you are debating an issue, you might choose to focus on implications of the research in your abstract, or start with results to engage your reader. If you are researching a specific illness or information based on statistics, you might pose a question or introduce a problem.

Consider how you would summarize your research paper to a friend '" how would you catch their attention in discussing your work? This would be a good way to engage a reader to your work for the first time as well.

Research paper abstracts can be written as an introduction to your paper. Generally, abstracts are completed last in a research paper, since all of the findings of your research are included within the body of your work. It is easier to then create an impression for your work in the abstract. Abstracts tend to be re-written, revised, and edited several times, ensuring that it catches the attention of your audience.
