The Importance of Sharing Paranormal Experiences

How Helping Yourself Can Help Others

Jill O'Malley
Within the realm of the supernatural there lies a problem. It may not seem all that important of a problem when first noticed but when viewed on the larger scale it becomes apparent that this problem may be the reason that paranormal studies are not taken more seriously today. This problem is silence. There can be many reasons for why silence quietly rules and things are kept hush-hush. For all of the reasons to stay quiet there are just as many reasons for why it is important to share your paranormal experiences with others.

Let me start by saying that this field is not easy. Paranormal investigators deal with a large variety of reactions after it has been made known where our interests lie. I personally have dealt with disbelief, laughter, fear, outright scorn, enough mocking to make me sick, enchantment and the occasional full acceptance and interest. Very few people have a blasé reaction when they find out I try to communicate with the dead. When I first started receiving these varying reactions I really had to sit down and think to myself if I could deal with the whole world knowing what I am interested in. Ultimately (as you can clearly see) I chose yes. I decided that I am comfortable enough in my beliefs and what I have experienced to deal with those who would (and do) scoff at me or think that I am "off my rocker". I still clearly remember my first negative response though and because of that I can understand why it can be so hard for those who have not chosen to stand against the criticisms and share what they have been through or experienced. Fear of being told "you must have imagined it" or "there has to be a logical explanation" is very real and to those who know that something extremely out of the ordinary happened it can be terrifying. Nobody wants to believe that they are crazy but when your rational mind cannot block out whatever happened the common reaction is to start doubting your sanity. Some people live their entire lives in this limbo of questioning how sane they are because they are so afraid of what others would think if they shared what happened.

As a paranormal investigator I try very hard not to push for information if someone comes to me (either in person or by email) with a question that sounds oddly similar to, "I have a cousin who has a friend who has a problem." I answer questions as I would if I were talking face to face with a client since the matter of who actually had the experience can be a moot point a lot of the time anyway. One of the biggest benefits of sharing what you have been through with someone who will listen and not jump immediately on the "you imagined it" bandwagon is that you gain a sense of peace. It is always nice to be assured that you are not going nuts. Even if after sharing your experience it is found to have a logical explanation the piece of mind gained can be priceless.

Another benefit of sharing your experience is that others who have had similar experiences can gain that sense of peace and perhaps some confidence from knowing that they are not the only one who has gone through it. In the same way that support groups can share so can people with paranormal experiences, leaving everyone feeling a little less alone. Paranormal experiences can be shared in safety thanks to the Internet. Anonymity is a wonderful thing when you don't want your family or friends to find out that you not only believe in the existence of ghosts but that you have experience with one as well. Paranormal forums and blog's are a great way to share your experiences and receive the acknowledgment that yes, it did happen without anyone knowing who you really are.

Living your life questioning your sanity is for obvious reasons not a good thing. By sharing your paranormal experiences you not only help yourself but also those who investigate the paranormal and those who are looking for their own lifeline to reality. There are many things in this world that cannot rationally be explained and for those who quietly suffer, unsure what to do or how they can get help, reading someone else's similar experiences can be a godsend. Who knows, perhaps the person who shares first will end up saving hundreds of other people's peace of mind along with their own.
