Skepticism is one of those disciplines which have found lots of takers around the world, thanks to its rationalistic nature. There was a time in the world when people were simply happy to accept whatever their religious leaders or other philosophers dished out at them and didn't bother to ask questions at all. At that time, some of the people, who were doubtful about the nature of things around them, started questioning them. This was the starting point for skepticism and ever since then, a lot of constructive critics have considered this method to be the best to acquire true knowledge
One of the most important arguments in favor of skepticism is that you doubt things until the very end and come up with true knowledge. Whoever may be the person, whatever may be the subject, questions are necessary and if you have the right questions, you will always get the right answers. In other words, the quest to ask questions and get answers is the starting point of a true skeptic. The concept of philosophical skepticism had its origin in Greek philosophy. Greek philosophers who were skeptics were severely critical of Stoicism, yet another sub branch of philosophy. Stoicism said that acquiring absolute knowledge is impossible as you cannot know the authenticity and the certainty of the knowledge you possess at any point of time. Skeptic philosophers were highly critical of this point of view and called stoics dogmatists. Thus, right from the point of origin, skepticism has always attracted a lot of attention all over the world.
There are several types of skepticism namely philosophical skepticism, scientific skepticism, active skepticism, and religious skepticism. Philosophical skepticism is the method of doubting things to get profound answers. Scientific skepticism, much like science itself, is about dealing with objects in a scientific manner to know the truth behind them. Active skepticism is the method of debunking superstitious faiths and exposing them in public, which a lot of people these days do in media. Religious skepticism is the method of doubting religious faiths and claims based on them.
A lot of philosophers around the world have said that skepticism is a good way of knowing things and it is one of the best methods of acquiring knowledge, as you are always absolutely certain of the things that you know. It is to be noted that merely raising questions just for the sake of it will not be considered philosophical skepticism, as one need to raise questions that are supposed to bring out the absolute truth behind any object.
