The Importance of Veterinarian Care for Your Dog

Marlyn Lopes
Many animal lovers become overwhelmed with their responsibility as the care givers of their furry family members. Often hectic lives, children and financial difficulties lead to the lack of proper care of a dog. Although these are valid reasons for the less than proper veterinarian care, they are not acceptable.

An animal can not bring itself to the vet to receive the vaccinations they need to keep them safe from completely preventable diseases. It is the responsibility of the dog owner to ensure the dog always has proper care and vaccinations.

Many dogs each year die because of diseases that could have been prevented if it was brought to a veterinarian clinic on a regular basis. Diseases like heartworms can be prevented by a veterinarian. This causes a dog to go blind, have difficulty breathing and slowly starve. Is this what you want for your dog? Of course not, so be sure your dog makes every appointment you set with your vet.

Vaccinations are small doses of a virus or disease that is injected int the dog in order to build up his or her immune system against it. This gives your dog a fighting chance against some of the diseases he or she comes in contact with. Some diseases your pet can come in contact with can be from other family pets, friend's pets or even wild animals.

There are risks that are associated with vaccinations and your pet, just as there are with humans having vaccinations. Your veterinarian should discuss all possible effects of each vaccination with you prior to giving it to your dog. The vet should also inform you of the symptoms to look for after your dog has had the injection.

Some of the serious effects that you should be aware of and immediately inform the vet are lethargic, dehydration, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Sometimes these symptoms can be expected after an injection along with a little tenderness at the site of the injection. However, it is always safer to make a call to your veterinarian.

Having your dog properly vaccinated is important for your dogs overall health and well being. You can save him or her from unnecessary pain, discomfort and possibly from an early demise. Most people consider their dog's a part of the family, therefore they should be treated as if they actually are.
