One significant reason is the obvious which we have either heard off of the radio and have seen countless television commercials is to prevent pet overpopulation. There is an alarming amount of dogs and cats in the United States than there are available homes for them and animal shelters are overflowing with animals. Over 100,000 cats are euthanized every year in Canada alone. Besides preventing overpopulation of pets, there are many more reasons why it is important for spaying female animals.

Most spays are performed once a female dog or cat reaches6 months old and before they have their first heat cycle. Cats and dogs must be in good health and up-to-date on all of their vaccinations before spaying. Spaying is sometimes referred to as having an animal "fixed". The medical terminology for spaying a female animal is called an OHE-ovariohysterectomy. Spaying of an animal is the surgical removal of a female animal's uterus and ovaries and is a routine veterinary procedure performed while the pet is anesthetized. Depending on the circumstances and the veterinarian who performs the surgery, your pet may require one or two nights of hospitalization.
