Keep in mind, if the hole was caused by rust it is always a good idea to remove the rust first. This can be done by gently buffing with sand paper. Doing this will help to eliminate future leaks within the same area and preserve the life of metal gutters. Any sand paper around the house will do.
Many homeowners find it convenient to use a product called gutter seal. It sells for about $6 to $10 and can be purchased at almost any hardware retail or your local home improvement store. Brands may vary by store and the expensive stuff isn't needed. Some may also choose to use silicone caulking which is perfectly acceptable. Either way, this task requires minimal tools. Typically, gutter seal is applied using a caulking gun. So, you will obviously need a latter, a caulking gun, and a cloth. However, this is best for metal gutters leaking due to holes. You simply fill the hole and wipe away the extra. It's that simple.
Leaky metal gutters that have sustained more damage than a few holes here or there may require a little bit more work. Often, these areas of damage must be patched. This is most often done by using a piece of aluminum. It is equally important to remove rust before beginning this project as well. However, you may need to use something more than a small piece of sandpaper. Often, a wire brush or sander is needed. Rust primer, metal paint, and a type of waterproof mastic should also be used for this project. This items too can be purchased at a hardware store. The area that has been sanded must be primed before applying the new piece of aluminum, followed by another coat after it has been attached. Some may choose to paint the patch, this is optional but recommended.
These are just some of the most convenient and inexpensive ways to repair a leaky gutter. Some metal gutters may require more or less work. As a matter of fact, some may require replacement. To help keep your gutters in optimum working condition, it is always a good idea to clean them out regularly by removing debris. Upkeep is much easier than maintenance.
