The Infamous Cockroach Hall of Fame and Museum in Plano, Texas

Pat Bartels
Normally I might not pay any attention to a story about a Cockroach Museum, but I had recently been to the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado. (Check out my story, The Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado is a Great Place to Visit) They had a cockroach display, and I found them fascinating in a way. I have to tell you that I despise cockroaches. They make my skin crawl, and to think that someone would want to honor them, if that's what you want to call it, by creating a museum for them makes wonder. The Butterfly Pavilion had hundreds of live cockroaches on display. It was too gross for words.

When I saw this news story on my cell phone, it got the best of me. I was off to discover the full story for myself. It turns out that the man involved, Michael Bohdan, is the owner of the Cockroach Hall of Fame and Museum. Oddly enough he is in the pest control business.

Apparently, he has been able to acquire a bit of fame with his unusual hobby. He's been on various TV shows including; The Johnny Carson Tonight Show, Good Morning America, Animal Planet, the View, and quite a few others. Up until now, I have never heard of him.

Most of his cockroaches are dead. That's not unusual considering his line of work. The odd thing is that they are dressed in costume. One of his cockroaches came to him from an 85 year old woman in Fort Worth, Texas. She dressed up her dead cockroach, sat it at a miniature piano, and named it Liberoachi. Don't ask. Maybe it was an activity at a senior center. If you go to his web page, The PestShop, you'll see a picture of Liberoachi and others.

He also has a display of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. These were one of the types of cockroach that was on display at the Butterfly Pavilion. The picture I have showcased for this article is from that display at the Butterfly Pavilion. Who knew I would ever have such an occasion to use such an, in my opinion, ugly picture. As you can see, these are very large cockroaches. About twice as large as the normal cockroach, that heaven forbid, any of us should encounter in our personal space.

I will not be visiting the Cockroach Museum any time soon, and now that I think about it, probably never. By all means, though, judge for yourself. I'm sure there's someone out there that wants to see these little oddities. I hear he's had about 6,000 visitors. It's open Monday through Friday from 12:15 pm until 5:00 pm. On Saturday he's open from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Oh, and admission is free.

Wow! You found a place that no one else would have likely known about... seems appropriate that it would come from Fox News.

You just reminded me of an apartment I called about once that was crawling with cockroaches. I'm going to have to blog about it. I'll send you the link.
