A. Hawaii is the southernmost. Alaska is the northernmost, westernmost and easternmost. Part of Alaska lies over the 180 degree line of longitude and is therefore east of mainland USA.
4. If you sailed east through the Panama canal which sea or ocean would you enter?
A. You sail east through the Panama Canal into the Pacific Ocean. The isthmus kinks around in the area of the canal as you will see on the atlas.
5. The name of which capital city is the anagram of another country's name?
A. Lima, capital of Peru, is an anagram of Mali.
6. Which was the largest island in the world before Australia was discovered?
A. Greenland. Australia is considered to be a continental land mass and not an island.
7. If you travelled due south from Detroit in Michigan which is the first foreign country you would reach?
A. Canada
8. What do Guatemala and Holland have in common with each other but no other country?
A. Guatemala means land of trees in Mayan which is what Holland means in Dutch.
9. If you stood on the highest mountain in Costa Rica what could you see?A. On a clear day you can see the Pacific ocean and the Caribbean sea.
10. You travel one mile south, one mile east and then one mile north. You are now back where you started. Where are you? One answer is the North Pole but where else on Earth could this be true? (of course you cannot go south from the South Pole).
A. Anywhere on a circle lying one mile north of a circle around the Earth of circumference of exactly one mile (or an even division of one mile) just north of the South Pole.
