The Innocent

Sherri Granato
As a victim of sexual abuse I can tell you first hand that the scars left behind from such horrendous acts never completely fade, and something or somebody somewhere will inevitably and unknowingly remind you that the innocent child within is still screaming to get out, unharmed and completely innocent from the ugly things in life that should just never be, and they have changed everything that you valued as true and good.

There is really no clear answer as to why molesters do these acts against children, but studies show that a vast majority of them were once abused themselves. Many abusers relate to children better than adults who can eventually lead to transgressions that could have possibly been avoided with awareness, education and facts concerning this alarming issue of maltreatment to a human. Sadly, sexual abuse typically occurs not between strangers, but between someone known by the child, and it is becoming a bigger problem then any of us could ever understand.

The Innocent

Just a small child

Living in silent pain

From speaking her hurt aloud

She must always refrain

Always quiet while at play

Distant from the other children

In her own secretive way

Letting the hurt out, she must do

But how is that possible

When she's been warned not to

She wonders why nobody could see

How her innocence was gone

Her childhood taken so easily

Silent tears on her pillow nightly fell

As she lay in the dark wondering

When she'd be free from this secret hell

She knows that she is forever scarred

It's just that no one see's it

For it lies deep in her heart.

great poem and i am sorry you have endured so much pain but that which does not kill us only makes us stronger i learned that everything that has happened in my life was a blessing because without them i could not be who i am and i am happy with me so god blees you and i pray you become stronger in your uphill battle

Miraculously, just as abuse or any hardship can be an overwhelming burden, some victims have aspired to great heights despite this. I see this triumph of good over evil inspirational and applaud all who have been abused and still face life head on. They are the brave. Excellent poem!

This is heartbreaking but you have so identified with these innocent young victims. It makes me pray, "Even so Lord, come quickly."

Excellent article and poem. :-) Bless you and I am so sorry for the evil of some people. I am glad you shared this with us. BRAVO! Too often, the innocent are made to feel ashamed for what others do.
