The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston

The Institute of Contemporary Art is located at 100 Northern Avenue in Boston, right on the waterfront. The building that houses the institute is a piece of art itself with a contemporary look that stimulates the mind.

The permanent collection has only been in existence since 2000. The museum is constantly adding to it with additions from contemporary artists that display cultural themes. Some of the artists featured include Cornelia Parker, Tara Donovan, Rineke Dijkstra, and Paul Chan. Rachel Perry Welty and Kelly Sherman, who are James and Audrey Foster Prize artists, are also featured at the permanent exhibit.

Upcoming exhibits that will visit the museum's inner domain include excellent works of art in the fields of architecture, graphics, product design, film, furniture, new technologies, animation, fashion, and science. From murals to prints to sculptures to drawings, the exhibits from influential artists are riveting and diverse.

A number of special programs are offered throughout the year for the enjoyment of the public:

Performances by contemporary musicians playing a mix of pop, punk, art rock, and classical are often mixed with the opportunity to dine. Entrance is by paid ticket and is age restricted for these events.

Puppet shows featuring important and fascinating historical events are also common fare at the museum. Entrance is by paid ticket and is offered first to paid members of the Institute of Contemporary Art.

Dance performances are another of the staple events offered for a celebration of human life. Some nudity is involved in particular performances.

The film events at the Institute of Contemporary Art are by paid admission as well. The films range from those with English subtitles to cartoons.

Talks given by renowned artists, designers, and museums are also offered throughout the year. Many of these talks will be offered free of charge.

Special events for families or for teenagers are also planned around the other events. Topics can range from filming to workshops to party events to performances.

Practical Information

The Institute is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 am until 5 pm, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 am until 5 pm, and Thursday and Friday form 10 am until 9 pm. It is closed every Monday except for the following: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day. It is also closed on New Years Day, July 4, Christmas, and Thanksgiving.

Admission prices vary and several opportunities for savings exist. Members and their children who are under the age of 17 are free. Families attending with at least two children under the age of 12 are free on the last Saturday of every month. Thursday nights are free every Thursday thanks to the generosity of Target.

The Institute is wheelchair accessible and a number of wheelchairs are available for use.

Museum spaces are available for rent. An onsite cafe and store are open during museum's hours.
