The Internet Blues Continues

The Ongoing Saga of the Problems with Our Home Internet Connection

Tony Payne
If you read my previous article about my internet connection woes then you will see that our home internet connection which has been really flaky for the last few weeks, died totally last Thursday night.

The connection finally went when someone came in the front door and closed it, my theory being that because the telephone cable runs through the door frame and is old, it's become worn, and therefore the line quality is getting worse and worse. However, despite attempts to tell them this, the internet provider and telephone engineer both say "Oh no, we monitored and found a problem on the line. It's now fixed".

So Thursday evening about 8:30pm, the front door opened and shut, and off went the internet completely.

Despite my attempts to open and shut the front door numerous times over the weekend, which really infuriated my fiancee, we didn't get the service back, and so my page views and ability to publish new articles, and also to promote them, just went out the window.

It wasn't until Monday afternoon that the internet provider did some more tests on the line, and blamed the fault on the fact that we had changed the password on the router. Well I did change it for security purposes - but LAST AUGUST! Anyhow, clicking on an option on the router connected the internet again, and they said that they would be monitoring the line.

Last night at least I did have internet service, however slow is not the word. S-L-O-W is more like it, only try stretching that out to a four letter word about twenty feet long!

One example of how slow it was, and I estimate it to be at least as slow as dialup, is when I logged out of one bank web site, and tried to bring up the login screen for the next. How does 9 minutes sound for the time it took for the login screen to appear? Yes - NINE MINUTES! It was just unbelievably slow and frustrating.

For a short time it did speed up, and I was then able to upload enough photographs for two slideshows, but then the speed dropped to almost zero again. At one point the phone rang, and the connection dropped out until two minutes after the call ended. This is not supposed to happen, and the correct filters are in place, however with the line quality as bad as it is, it just can't sustain a telephone conversation and internet at the same time.

I am hoping that they see the quality problems today, and make an appointment for an engineer to come out as soon as possible. It's so frustrating to not have access to the internet in this day and age.

Wish me luck, and hopefully I can upload more photographs tonight and publish them. As long as you are not all fed up with my collection yet...

If you listen carefully, in the stillness of the evening air, you might just make out the cry of those poor souls whose internet connection has failed them... Doesn't it sound rather like Sting's voice?

I want my
I want my AC
I want my
I want my AC

(sounds of drumming and guitars getting gradually louder)

Look at those morons
What the heck are they doing
I got a problem with my ISP

That's all you are getting in this installment. I might have to have another listen to Money For Nothing by Dire Straits and see what I can come up with. Unless someone else would like to have a go...

I feel your pain. There is nothing worse than having a wonky internet connection when you work on the internet. I would be freaking out if I were you.

You need a new 'puter, honey.

I've had both fast and slow connections, but prefer fast..I hope your situation gets better soon!!

I was hoping that, since you were able to upload some slide shows, things had improved greatly as far as the Net was concerned. Sorry to hear you're still having trouble. :(

Maybe you could nail the front door shut and say that apparently the internet has somehow managed to freeze the front door? It's a thought. :/

I am definitely addicted to the Internet. As for using the back door instead. I did suggest that, but I got a dirty look!

I couldn't imagine a world without a fast internet connection. When even separated from one for even a short period of time, my hands begin to shake uncontrollably, I begin to start sweating incessantly, I cannot sleep, my nerves begin twitching, and I become irritable. Gee, could it be that perhaps I'm addicted to it?

My grandparents didn't have to worry about pins, passwords or persnickety internet connections but then again, they didn't have the fun we do sometimes either. Sorry it still sucks - I can commiserate.

We have this problem too. Have tried numerous carrirs and always the same. God forbid there's a storm, then there's nothing. I blame ours on being in a valley. No cell phone service either
