Of course, for some of us, finding out what Sandy Koufax's WHIP was in 1964 is fun (it was .928, by the way). Still, it's always interesting to find a unique site with new toys to play with, a blog with a new perspective on baseball commentators, or a site that parodies the biggest stars and stories in the sport.
Sure, But Can You Express Baseball in a Pie Chart?
As far as I know, the answer to that question is still no. However, FanGraphs is a site devoted to showing the ebb and flow of each and every baseball game through graphs. From the first batter to the final out, this site creates a graph showing the estimated percentage chance of each team to win a game. Surprisingly, the graphs tell as interesting a story as any box score; a graph that slowly rises to the top represents a game where one team pulled away gradually, while a graph with large jutting lines in the late innings shows a back-and-forth affair with plenty of lead changes.
These graphs also allow the calculation of new statistics, such as Win Probability Added - defined as the total percentage change to a team's winning probability a player has added over the course of a season.
They Don't Really Want Him Fired
Have you ever listened to a baseball commentator and wondered if they really said what you thought you heard? Or read a newspaper column so bad, that you started asking why the columnist had a job? If so, you'd probably fit right in with the guys at Fire Joe Morgan, a site that is, incidentally, not at all concerned with firing Joe Morgan.
That's not to say they like the guy. His weekly chats on ESPN.com (not to mention his TV appearances) are a constant source of material for FJM, which prides itself in pointing out awful baseball arguments made by commentators, columnists, coaches and players. So when, for instance, John Kruk suggests the Yankees will win 130 games, but the Red Sox will win the AL East in the same season, you'll be sure to find a post about it within a few hours. If you've ever written a column where you mentioned Darin Erstad's experience as a college punter, or called David Eckstein gritty, you can be sure the guys at FJM are waiting anxiously for your next article.
Not Your Average Chat Room
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if professional baseball players had their own private chat rooms, where they could communicate using the AOL-speak of a 13-year-old? Well, neither have I, but it doesn't mean the concept can't lead to one of the funniest baseball sites on the web.
The Dugout bills itself as "The Official Chat Room of Major League Baseball," and provides hilarious commentary and parody using the fictional online personas of your favorite players. A good portion of the humor comes just from the players' screen names: it's not hard to figure out who might use JetersNeverProsper or MannyTheTorpedoes. However, this is one of those sites that can't be properly explained without seeing it - you'll just have to experience it for yourself.
