Their job is one of high risk, low pay and often even lower appreciation. Through this memorial, the firefighter can be remembered and his/her name displayed for others to read and reflect upon and pay tribute to those brave men and women we call firefighters.
According to the official website, "The criteria for getting a name on the wall (Outside of duty) is the firefighter must have served a minimum of 10 years on an Iowa Fire Department or died while an active member of a fire department.
The cost to have a name put on the wall is $100.00 and must be paid by the family or the fire department" (there are other qualifications for those "on duty" as well but it is best the reader should check those requirements out on site.)
Following this link you will see a statue of a firefighter climbing a ladder while carrying a young girl to safety. The story goes that the models used for this statue were in fact the brother and daughter of a fallen firefighter. When one stands close to the statue and realizes what it represents, it is a sobering moment but one that is important to experience in order to appreciate more fully what sacrifices firefighters often have to make for us.
Too often we forget to pay tribute to those men and women who put their lives on the line to save our homes and loved ones from fire. It seems that when the fire is out and the embers cleared, our memories of these brave individuals disappear as quickly as the smoke dissipates. To stop for a moment and see this memorial is a moment that will never be forgotten. For in the simplicity of this simple monument, the visitor can sense a pride of job and a solemn dedication as well.
Located off I-80 in Coralville, Iowa, exit 242, it is very easy to locate and a nice stop as well. Inside the visitors center are various displays and information available should you wish to know more. If you are ever in the area I invite you to take a short detour to see this memorial...it is a testament to the men and women who work so hard to fight the "monster" we call fire.
