The iPhone 3G Takes on HTC Touch Pro and Blackberry Storm

A Guide to Help You Choose

Jessica Bosari
If you are still on the fence about getting a touch screen phone, this review will help you decide which one is best for you. There are really only three phones in the Touch Screen category worth considering: the iPhone 3G, HTC Touch Pro and Blackberry Storm. Here is a helpful guide to help you choose.

Screen Size

The iPhone has a relatively large screen at 3.5 inches, or 320 x 480 pixels. The HTC is smaller at 240 x 320 and the Blackberry has the mother of all screens at 480 x 360 (only slightly larger than iPhone).

Best Operating System

The iPhone features Apple's innovative operating system. It is simple, intuitive and easy to navigate. HTC Touch Pro and Blackberry use Windows Mobile, which affords additional functionality, letting you edit and save files. On the negative side, Windows is more difficult to use and more likely to irritate users.

Hard Disk Memory

The iPhone's memory is the largest by far. Even the basic iPhone carries a larger store than the other two phones together at 8 G. You can buy the 16G iPhone for only $100 more. The HTC and Blackberry do not come close, with expansion cards available for only for 1G memory.

Blue Tooth and Wi-Fi

The iPhone and HTC are both Wi-Fi and Blue Tooth enabled. Blackberry has no Wi-Fi, which means you will be doing all your online functions through the Verizon Network, not the most reliable on the market.

Still Versus Video Camera

Blackberry put a video camera in its phone with a 3.2 meg-pixel still camera to boot. The iPhone and HTC only have a 2.0 megapixel still camera.

Heavy Weights

HTC weighs 5.3 oz, and the Blackberry is a hefty 5.5 oz. The iPhone is the lightest of the three at 4.8 oz.

Keyboarding

While many users are happy with the iPhone's touch screen keyboard, some are just not ready to give up the tactile experience of buttons. These users will prefer the slide out keyboard on the HTC Touch Pro. The Blackberry touch keyboard pales in comparison to the iPhone. It is full of quirks and frustrates many users. However, the Blackberry and HTC Touch Pro both work with styluses, a feature that many iPhone users wish they could get.

Battery Life

All three phones have comparable battery life, but the Blackberry Storm has the advantage of an easily switchable battery. This allows you to carry along a spare and get more done without a recharge.

Network and Plan Costs

Verizon and Sprint cannot touch AT&T for speed or price. The AT&T plan gives limitless data and plentiful voice for roughly $70. You can choose to add 200 texts for $5 or instead select unlimited text for $20. Similar plans at Verizon and Sprint will cost you at least $100 and the networks are not as fast as AT&T.

Pricing

Since AT&T started subsidizing the price of the iPhone, it has become much more affordable at $199 for the 8G model and $299 for the 16G model. The HTC Touch Pro will run you $299 as well. The Blackberry costs $199.

Winner Take All

Unfortunately, the HTC Touch does not live up to the hype. The price and features cannot touch the iPhone or the Storm.

The iPhone is still ahead of the competition for fun. With a generously sized touch screen, pragmatic user interface and many special features, it is matchless. iPhone also has the better cost, with the cheapest unlimited data plan and a sizable allotment of free voice time.

However, for business users, the Blackberry could be the winner. Which phone you choose will hinge upon the amount of frustration you will tolerate from the Verizon network and how much you want to spend on Verizon services. If you are willing to bring along a laptop to get some work done, the iPhone will suit you fine. Otherwise, you may want to grab yourself a Blackberry.

  • Do some research before writing4/26/2009

There are so many factual errors in this article that it's clear the author didn't actually use the devices or networks in question, and just wrote it as a promotion for the iPhone and AT&T. HTC Touch Pro has a 640x480 display, not 320x240, giving it the best picture of all the phones (albeit on a smaller 2.8 inch display). BB Storm uses RIM's BB operating system, not Windows Mobile. The iPhone is limited to 8gb/16gb with no expansion capability, while HTC Touch Pro and BB Storm can take memory cards up to 8gb. AT&T's 3G data network has been shown in many tests to be slower than Sprint's EV-DO data network. iPhone pricing isn't anywhere near $70 a month as claimed; in addition to the voice plan, iPhone users pay $30 for unlimited data and separately for text messaging, which can quickly push the total cost to $100 or more.
