The IPod Touch: A Review

Jimmy Smith
I recently got my hands on a 2nd generation iPod touch and it is an exciting and innovative piece of machinery. It cost $199 for the 8GB model. The most stunning thing about the iPod touch, is that it looks exactly like an iPhone 3G. There are a few differences, but you wouldn't be able to tell them right away. For one thing, the iPod touch is definitely a bit slimmer. The iPod touch also runs the same exact OS as the iPhone and you can connect to wi-fi networks with it to download apps. I will go into the benefits of having wi-fi on an iPod touch in just a few moments.

The touch screen is amazing, and surprisingly accurate. The accelerometer makes it so when you flip the screen, it tilts with you so everything is right side up. It really is the world's first hand held computer. It does most of the things your home computer will do. It is very light and thin and is nothing at all to carry around and the battery last a long time. You can connect to your friends wi-fi networks and have a computer in the palm of your hand with internet access anywhere there is wi-fi. You can surf on Google, or chat with friends on Skype. This iPod touch is a very exciting step forward for Apple. It is basically an iPhone without a phone service.

Now here is the exciting part about the 2nd generation iPod touch. You can actually call people from it. All you have to do is hook up a mic to it, download skype and then be close to a wi-fi network and you can turn your iPod touch into an iPhone. If someone else is talking to you from a computer it is absolutely free to talk! If there is ever wireless internet access points everywhere, then the phone companies are in some serious trouble!

You must download the right firmware before you can use your iPod touch as a phone, but it is an exciting alternative to purchasing an iPhone. The applications store is the same place you buy application for your iPhone.

In conclusion, the iPod Touch is a great little machine that you can watch video and listen to music as well as surf the web on. You can even call people through a program called skype if you are close to a wireless internet access point. Skype does charge a fee to call a phone though.
