The IPod's Dirty Little Secret

Sara Kate
Everyone has an iPod. Within that iPod lurks a dirty little secret. Maybe it is Celine Dion's entire collection, or perhaps it is Andrew Ridgeley's post Wham solo album. Whatever it is, we all have one. It is the song we secretly rock out to while driving (with the windows up of course) or the album we mock in public, but the play counter in our iTunes proves we are such liars.

As a psychological experiment, I polled a handful of my friends about the most embarrassing song in their iPod. The results were profoundly entertaining. Here are a couple of the priceless gems found in my friends' iPods:

"Searching my Soul" by Vonda Shepard. You might recognize it as the theme song for Ally McBeal. This particular friend even went so far as to change the Artist Name in iTunes so people scrolling through his iPod wouldn't see it. That takes commitment!

"Screwed" by Paris Hilton. I have to give a pass to this particular friend because it was part of his 'Celebrities Who Should Avoid Music Careers' playlist. Others included Eddie Murphy, Don Johnson and Russell Crowe.

"Dirrty" by Christina Aguilera. In and of itself, this particular song is not embarrassing, most of us probably have it ourselves. But, you need to consider the source. The rest of his iPod is filled with Metallica, Iron Maiden, GNR, etc. If his metal friends only knew.

"What's new Pussycat" by Tom Jones. If it were 'It's not Unusual' you could chalk it up to love of the Carlton dance from "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air." But, nope. It is just this one song. Shameful.

"Cruisin'" by Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis. My friend was mortified to reveal this one. Though I'd love to tease her, I can't really judge. It is on mine too. As is Paltrow's rendition of "Bette Davis Eyes."

I guess it is only fair to reveal my most embarrassing songs. (Please keep in mind, the majority of my iPod is filled with good artists like Dave Matthews, Keane, Guster, Pete Yorn, Jonny Lang and The Tragically Hip.) So, without further ado, here is my most shameful.

"We Fit Together" by O-Town. That's right. O-Town! I know, I know. My only excuse is because the song was popular while I was in college and I associate it with happy memories.
