"What have you bought?"
She walked into the kitchen with him and watched him take out a bottle of wine.
"A few things to go with our dinner."
"That's a lot of food there."
"It's only bread, some cakes and chocolates for you. I thought we could eat the chocolates later though."
She laughed, beginning to feel happy at last. She knew it was because she'd decided to forget everything that she was scared of and try to start thinking of her future first.
"We won't eat all that."
"You're right. We won't, because we'll have other things on our mind."
"Like what?"
"Like us getting together as soon as dinner is over."
"Demetri, that's not going to happen."
"We'll see."
She knew she wanted to make love with him, but she was hoping they could talk and get to know one another too.
They sat down to eat and Demetri was about to pour her some wine.
"None for me, thank you."
She quickly placed her hand over her glass.
"Why not?"
"Because I don't want to drink wine tonight."
"Are you afraid to get drunk?"
She didn't want to lie, but she couldn't think of anything else to say.
"That's one of the reasons."
"And what's the other?"
"I can't say yet."
"Don't hide anything from me Phillipa. It's not good to have secrets from one another."
"It's not a secret."
"Then what's the other reason?"
She finished the last of her spaghetti and placed her fork on the plate. She wasn't sure what she would say, but she hated lying.
"Why don't we go and sit on the sofa. You have finished, haven't you?"
She looked at his plate. It still had some food left on it, but his fork had been left there for a while without him eating it.
"Yes I'm full. You cook very well Phillipa, but my heart is fluttering for you at this moment and it's stopping me from eating your delicious food."
"Thanks for the compliment, but that sort of talk isn't going to get you anywhere."
"Let's sit on the sofa then and you can tell me your other reason or whatever you want to tell me."
She sat down and he sat closely next to her. She felt his thigh touch hers, making her want him even more.
"I don't want to alarm you Demetri. I didn't know this would happen."
"What are you talking about?"
"My other reason for not drinking the wine you'd bought."
"I see. Is there something wrong, Phillipa?"
"Well, you could say that, but it's not serious. Not unless you think it is."
"Just tell me, darling."
He stroked her face, making her sensitive and unable to explain what she was about to tell him.
"I...I'm...pregnant."
His hand dropped from her cheek and his startled look scared her.
