The Island of Love - Chapter Two Part Two

Part Two of Chapter Two

Denise Larkin
She got up slowly and opened the door.

"I was asleep. What are you doing here?" She looked at Demetri and then remembered what she'd done.

"I'm here because you walked out on me! What were you thinking? Why did you go like that? I didn't know what had happened to you. Then the receptionist told me that you'd asked for a taxi and left. Why?" She was embarrassed.

"I'm sorry Demetri, but I was very tired and my head was hurting. I felt unwell and needed to get back so I could rest. I didn't mean to startle you like that. You and Hellena seemed to have a lot to talk about and I didn't want to be in your way. It was better that I left." He walked into the bungalow and closed the door.

"Well, you were wrong. I didn't have anything to talk about with Hellena, except that I wanted to tell her that the engagement was off. That's what we discussed. I'm no longer going to marry Hellena. We were never in love with one another, it's our families that wanted us to marry." Phillipa was shocked.

"I'm sorry it didn't work out. Will your family be annoyed?" She tried not to look at him, focusing her eyes on something other than Demetri.

"I've told my parents how I've felt and they've never minded what I did. Of course, my father wants the business to nourish, but they've always known that I didn't want to marry her. They knew I hadn't told Hellena about breaking the engagement too and they knew that we didn't love one another. She was only marrying me for my money. She wanted our fathers to merge their business once we were married. It hadn't occurred to me that she had only wanted the business." She felt relieved to hear he wasn't getting married, but she didn't know why.

"I'm sorry it didn't work out." He touched her hand and then pulled her to him.

"Aren't you glad that I'm free? At least, I can hold you like this and not worry about it." She tried to push him away.

"I don't think that's a good idea. After all, you've just broken an engagement and Hellena might still be feeling upset." He laughed.

"I doubt Hellena would be upset about anything other than business. Look, why don't you rest now and I'll come back this evening and take you to dinner. I know a quiet taverna along the beach here. They do some fabulous dishes and we can talk there. What do you say?" She knew she couldn't give in. Anyway, it would give her a chance to tell him that she wasn't interested. She had to make it clear.

"All right. What time Demetri?" He turned to open the door.

"Eight o'clock." He turned and gently put his hand on her cheek, caressing the side of her face and neck. "You have beautiful cheeks. I wish I could kiss them. Unfortunately, I've got to go, so we'll continue this later." He walked outside and closed the door softly behind him, leaving her standing there.

She shivered. Her body shook with excitement. She couldn't understand why she felt this way, but her thoughts told her to push all feeling away. She couldn't go through with this again. It was too much for her. She didn't want romance. She just wanted to be left alone.

Phillipa was running her bath when the telephone rang. It was Marina. She felt a little uneasy when Marina asked if she would like to come to dinner tonight. What could she say to her friend? That she was seeing her brother instead? It was awkward, but she would have to say 'yes' to her friend and put Demetri off. She couldn't tell Marina that she'd been out with her brother. She felt unsure at the thought of her friend knowing. What would she think of her? Would she think she was trying to steal Demetri from Hellena? She didn't want to think of the answer.

"Phillipa, are you still there? You seem a bit quiet. Are you all right?" She shook her head, quickly trying to clear her mind and get back to her conversation with Marina. "Sorry, what did you say Marina? I didn't hear you. I think the line went dead for a minute." Phillipa lied.

"I said, will eight-thirty be all right for tonight? Nicholas can pick you up."

"Yes, that's fine. I'll be ready." They said goodbye and Phillipa replaced the telephone on its receiver still wondering how she was going to tell Demetri she was cancelling dinner with him.

She decided to get ready and walk over to Demetri early to tell him. What could he say? She was going to dinner at his sister's house. She was her friend. She couldn't decline Marina's invitation to dinner.

She had to talk to Demetri and tell him to stay away from her. There couldn't be a relationship between them. He was destined to marry Hellena, no matter what he had told her. They were both from the same country. They knew each other very well. They had lots in common, such as the business. Phillipa knew she couldn't be involved with Demetri. It was too risky. It would ruin her friend's trust in her.

She dressed. She wore a blue chiffon dress. It was a perfect fit, showing off her slim and supple figure. The dress hung neatly, revealing her long tanned legs.

She walked to Demetri's bungalow feeling slightly nervous. She hoped he wouldn't mind her going to dinner elsewhere. She shook the thoughts from her mind. Why was she so worried about what he would think? She would tell him she couldn't accept his invitation to dinner and that she had other plans that she'd forgotten about.

She tapped on his door lightly. The door opened and there he stood, wearing a pair of shorts and nothing else. His bare body made her quiver.

"Phillipa, you're early. Did you miss me?" He smiled deeply and stood back from the door to let her in.

"Demetri, I can't come to dinner with you tonight. I've got other plans that I'd forgotten about. I'm sorry, but I'll have to cancel." The smile slowly turned to a look of thunder.

"I see. And where are you going instead?" She didn't think it was any of his business and decided to be quiet.

"I don't think that's any of your concern. I thought I should let you know before you changed for dinner." She tried not to look at him. She felt ashamed at not telling him the truth.

"It doesn't matter. We'll have dinner tomorrow night. Although, I can't wait that long." She looked up quickly and knew she would have to put her foot down if she wanted to end this nonsense.

"Actually, I think it would be better if we didn't have dinner together at all. It's obvious that we annoy one another. I think it would be easier for everyone if you tried getting on with Hellena a bit more. After all, she's the one you should be taking to dinner." His expression turned sour.

"I've told you. I'm not with Hellena. I'm not going to marry her and we will never be together."

She turned away from him.

"It doesn't matter. I still think it's best like this. I must go now." She walked to the door, but he had got to her first. His hands gently slid around her small waist and pulled her back onto his chest.

"Why are you resisting me? You know you want me." She could feel his breath on her neck. His lips touched her, caressing her skin sensuously.

"Phillipa, you look so irresistible. You shouldn't have come here tonight dressed like that. You look so beautiful. I can't help myself."

She knew she should go. She didn't know how to resist him. She felt so warm and snug in his arms that she didn't want to move.

He slowly turned her around, so that she was facing him and then kissed her lips. She felt safe in his arms. How could she walk away from him?

He caressed her body. His hands slid around her waist, moving them slowly up and down. He kissed her face, neck and lips giving her pleasure.

He took her by the hand and led her to the sofa, so they could sit down.

"Phillipa, I need you," he moaned. His hands caressed her back, making her quiver and cry out.

She sat there, looking up at him. He smiled. "You're so beautiful." He touched her gently and pulled her towards him. He kissed her lips hungrily. She kissed him back, feeling too weak to push him away. He had captured her and she didn't want him to stop. It was the sound of a loud knock that froze Phillipa. She quickly became more aware of the knock at the front door and tried to get up.

"There's someone at the door. Please, we must stop. It's not right." Demetri looked at her passionately.

"Ignore it." Phillipa wouldn't listen. She pushed him away and ran into the bathroom, locking the door behind her.

Once there, she composed herself. She heard voices outside. It was the sound of a woman's laugh that caught her attention.

She knew who it was. Phillipa wished, suddenly, that she hadn't gone into the bathroom so hastily. She wished now, that she had left instead. She slowly opened the door and heard Hellena speak. She looked dashing in a black silk dress. Her hair was fixed high on her head, showing off her slender neck. She was obviously here to talk to Demetri and maybe try and win him back.

Phillipa knew she was in the way. She felt guilty for just being there. Demetri was watching her.

"I must go now." She said and walked to the door quickly.

She was outside, walking on the sand when Demetri caught her. "Wait. Hellena is only here, because she is trying her best to get back with me. I don't want that Phillipa. I want you."

"You can't have me. It won't work. What would your family say? They'll be devastated. You must make a go of things with Hellena and forget me. I must go now."

I'm not quite sure what to make of Demetri. He is certainly persistent, arrogant and sure of himself, but Phillipa is obviously having a tough time resisting his charms. It's strange, but reading your story really takes me back to Cyprus and reminds me of happy, pleasant memories I enjoyed in the past.
