With water temperatures averaging about 80 degrees year-round, the beaches are a big attraction in The Bahamas. The emerald and turquoise waters and breath-taking beaches provide seemingly endless miles of sand in white or pink. Secluded Gold Rock Beach on Grand Bahama Island is spectacular at low tide when it unfolds its signature "welcome mat" - miles of golden rippled sand.
One of the best-known beaches is Cable Beach west of Nassau. Cable Beach is over two miles of beautiful sandy beaches alongside first-class resorts, within easy reach of all beach activities, shopping and nightlife. Harbour Island, ranked "The Best Island in the Caribbean" by Travel & Leisure magazine in 2005, is famous for its pink-hued sand beaches. With its quaint New England architecture and rows of century-old trees, it is a sight to see.
Water sports abound in The Bahamas. The water has an unmatched clarity with a striking array of blues and lush coral reefs that make it a treasure for snorkeling. If you want more excitement and adventure then visit Walker's Cay in the Abacos where snorkelers can see up to 200 sharks at a time from the surface. For a classic snorkeling destination, visit Grand Bahama Island, which has marked snorkeling trails off the West End, at Old Bahama Bay.
Dolphin Encounters take place regularly in a number of locations throughout the Bahamas. At Lucaya on Grand Bahama Island, snorkelers are introduced to dolphins in controlled circumstances. The Dolphin Swim allows six snorkelers to swim with dolphins in the protected waters of Sanctuary Bay. If you prefer wild dolphin encounters go to the island of Bimini where Bimini Undersea has a success rate for their Wild Dolphin Excursion of 80 percent.
With breathtaking scenery, annual regattas and modern marinas, The Bahamas are a magnet for boating and sailing, attracting over 100,000 boaters each year. There are 63 active marinas with 3,140 slips and 34 ports of entry.
Fishing enthusiasts enjoy the challenge of catching a variety of fish. Long Island is well known for its fly and spin-casting bone fishing and deep-sea fishing. The fishing is excellent throughout The Abacos and for marlin and other spectacular sailfish look no further than The Exumas.
For family fun activities in The Bahamas, you will find kayaks, personal watercraft, sail boats, fishing trips, bicycle rentals, hiking, swimming, snorkeling, golfing, and dining at waterfront restaurants and harbor tours.
The Islands of the Bahamas has the clearest waters in the world, the world's third longest barrier reef, 5% of the world's coral and is located only 50 miles off the Florida coast. What more could you want?
