Many factors are threatening the peace of the society today. One of these factors is the issue of 'religious intolerance' among the people. Without mincing words, it is an issue of great concern in the world today being prevalent in educational institutions at all levels (primary, secondary and tertiary), communities,Local Government Areas, towns, states and among countries.
There are many religions in the world today including Christianity, Islam, traditional among others. However, the issue of 'religious intolerance' is associated with the two principal religions (Islam and Christianity). Over the years, followers of these two principal religions have been at loggerhead for supremacy.
The issue of religious intolerance is having several consequences in the society. Many wars had been fought within and among countries in the world, which could be traced to religious intolerance among the people. There had also been many terrorist attacks in the world due to this. It is disturbing to note that several lives had been wasted while valuable properties destroyed due to this issue. The case of the bombing of the World Trade Centre in United States of America (USA) on 11th September 2001, is a typical example. There is no doubt that many lives were lost while many properties destroyed through this ugly and condemnable act.
Today, other cases like suicide bombings, kidnappings, assassinations, use of biological and chemical weapons among others are prevalent in many countries in the world, which can be traced to religious intolerance. The world is now divided on religious line. Today, some countries are tagged' Muslim countries' while some are 'Christian countries'. Christian followers are not free to travel to Muslim countries. Ditto for the Muslim followers. In addition, Muslim ideologies are now supported by Muslim leaders and countries while Christian leaders and countries support Christian ideologies. There is suspicion everywhere. A Muslim leader cannot pay a visit to a Christian leader. Ditto for a Christian leader to a Muslim leader, else it would be misinterpreted.
In view of the negative consequences of religious intolerance, it is imperative for the world to live in harmony notwithstanding the religious difference. World leaders should put their heads together, act in unity and shun acts capable of causing breakdown of law and order in their countries because of religious intolerance.

Post a CommentAkindelly, you're exactly right. We should not be in the business of condemning others and we do much harm to our own beliefs or religion if we do. There is something wrong for example with pro-lifers bombing abortion clinics. This does more harm to pro-life movements than anything else. You points are well taken and I hope taken to heart. I, for one, have listened and agree 100%. Tolerance is the only path to understanding. Thanks for such a great article. : - )
