The Jack Russell Terrier is Needy

Rielle
The Jack Russell Terrier is a tough little dog with bundles of energy. They were first bred in the 1700's by a Reverend. Eddie on Frasier was a Jack Russell Terrier as well as Milo in the Jim Carey movie The Mask. These little dogs like to dig and explore anywhere they can squeeze into. They are very curious and fun loving. They can be difficult to train and live with if they are not shown strong authority but with strong leadership they are very trainable and can be taught several tricks and behaviors. As with many dogs of small stature, Jack's are very prone to small dog syndrome so don't over spoil these guys or at least make sure to enforce proper behaviors. Small dog syndrome can lead to a snappish dog who displays guarding behaviors, may bark obnoxiously, and even be deadly violent towards other dogs. They may develop separation anxiety if treated too much like a baby. This is a rather high strung breed who will become restless and troublesome if not occupied! His hunting instincts are very strong, more so than any other terrier. Therefore, they are never going to be trustworthy around small animals. The Jack Russell is not a good first dog. He is better left to an experienced owner. He needs very clear rules. If you give in to him even once he will show stubborn willfulness. He was originally used to hunt fox. Now his talents include hunting, tricks, agility, and tracking. These dogs are not couch potatoes and will not be happy sitting with you all day.

The Jack Russell loves to play games and chase things. He is obedient in general and is not afraid of much at all. The Jack Russell is a loving and friendly pet despite needing strong leadership. They are fine with children as long as they are not teased or mistreated. A Jack Russell should have a compact body with a muscular neck. They have a smooth coat in predominant white with tan, black or brown markings. The coat can be rough or smooth. The Jack Russell grows to 10-15 inches tall and will weigh 14 -18 pounds as an adult. A long brisk walk is needed for this high energy breed, daily. They will also be very happy with a roomy yard or space that they can run and be free in. Daily exercise will make this dog a better companion. They are small enough to live in an apartment or small home if they get plenty of exercise outside. Keep in mind that digging comes natural to them and they will dig up the yard.

Grooming is very easy, requiring only regular brushing with a firm bristle brush and minimum bathing. This is a long lived breed, living an average 15 years and known to make it for up to 19 years. They have few health problems but some are likely to develop eye, ear and hip problems. Also there may be problems with dislocated kneecaps. This dog makes for a very amusing and fun pet. With the right leadership from an experienced owner he can also be a very well behaved pet but he is not for everyone. Leadership can not be stressed enough with this breed. It is necessary for a happy dog and owner.
