As eclectic and fashionable as downtown Ferndale is, it is kind of weak when it comes to coffee shops. There are basically two, Java Hutt and AJ's. I spent the other night at Java Hutt and enjoyed the atmosphere. It was definitely casual with no coffee snobbery that I could discern.

The WiFi is free, but you'll need to ask for the password. I don't mind this at all, because it allows for at least a modicum of security. The bathrooms require a key to get into, and there are not a lot of plugs for your laptop if you're bringing one.

As to the coffee, it was definitely above average and surprisingly reasonably priced. Barista Shelby was courteous and professional, and the other patrons all seemed to be in a good mood. There is an area at the front of the coffee house with some comfy furniture and tables along the sides that continue to the back of the building.

It was kind of warm inside, but very quiet. It is a great place to hold a chat with some friends, get a little work done on your laptop, and enjoy a coffee.
