The Jingle of Change in a Pocket

Elisa Ashley
The jingle of change in a pocket
dictates the way that I feel
and brings a premonition of my future

The jingle of change in a pocket
brings relief to my small body
Daddy is home and will rescue me
from Mommy's hurting words
and the stinging pain of her anger

The jingle of change in a pocket
breaks the silence of the night
as he climbs the stairs
It brings dread and fear
as the rest of my family sleeps and he enters my room

The jingle of change in a pocket
brings hatred and loathing
as it chimes one last chorus
as his pants hit the floor

The jingle of change in a pocket
fills me with humiliation
as we later rejoin the family
and I am forced to act as if nothing has happened.
