The Job Hunt: Get Hired

Angela Beckman
It's an obstacle we've all had to jump over at one point. Whether we like it or not, working is a part of society and the only way we can make the cut. Some people can snag jobs easily, but others have more trouble. For those who need some help, read on.

Part Time/Full Time
Full time jobs are between 36 and 40 hours a week. Anything less is considered part time. You'll want to make sure that your schedule (school, obligations) don't coincide with your job.

The Application
Always carefully read the application. Have good references, like close family friends or teachers. It's also a good idea to know popular people in the community, like those who run blood drives or fundraisers. Make sure your handwriting is neat and legible.

Dressing The Part
When you're applying for a job, you always want to look presentable. Dress conservatively. Slacks, a long skirt, a blouse, or a long sleeved button-up shirt should do the trick. Make sure you take out piercings or cover up tattoos. Comb or straighten your hair. If you're a guy, shave. It's also a good idea to cut your hair (for guys) if it's long or messy. Tone down on makeup and smile.

Calling Back
After you've submitted your application, give it a few days before you call to check on your application status. Give them time to review it. Try calling them. If you're asked to keep checking in, switch things up. Get a shower and clean yourself up. Go into wherever you're applying and ask in person about the application. Ask to see the manager if you want to, as some employees may forget to send messages or might be unreliable.

The Wait
If you're waiting for the manager to call you back, it's a good idea to keep looking for employment. Even if you're accepted for an interview, you might not get the job. Keep your options open at all times, and apply anywhere and everywhere you can. If you get multiple calls or interviews, weigh your choices. If one pays better or offers better benefits, it could be the better option. Consider driving distance, pay, hours, and the quality of the job.

You Are Your Worst Enemy
If you don't take job hunting seriously, you might be out of luck. The way you behave reflects whether or not you'll get hired. No matter what type of job it is, (even if it's at McDonalds) the business wants professional, organized, and polite employees. Even if you don't want to cut your hair or buy a nice shirt to wear to an interview, it will pay off in the long run when you get the job.
