The Job of a Private Investigator

JOEY S
What exactly does a private investigator do? If you watch a lot of television, you may get the impression that it is a glamorous and exciting job. Others see at as a sneaky job where a private investigator follows a cheating spouses every move to collect proof of their cheating ways. They think the private investigator will break in a cheating person's house to gather evidence to use against them. The truth is the job is tough and is requires certain skills such as patience, record collecting and being able to prepare reports. They should also have good interview skills and be able to think outside the square.

Most people who are private investigators are ex policemen/women. These people have the perfect background to become private investigators as they have experience in surveillance and investigations. They also have good people skills which are needed when conducting interviews. Also as ex cops they worked unusual and long hours which is required as a private investigator. It is simply not a normal 9 to 5 job and you must have the discipline to work long hours, even on weekends until the particular assignment is completed.

Private investigators are usually contracted to insurance companies. Before an insurance company makes a payout say for a work injury case, they sometimes hire a private investigator to make sure the person making the claim is in fact injured so badly that he/she will not be able to work for a while or forever. The private investigator in this case performs surveillance work to make sure that the injured person isn't actually working in a job while receiving the compensation payments. They also perform other tasks such as interviewing people to gather facts on the person suspected of cheating the system.

Private investigators may also be employed privately by a person who suspects his/her spouse/partner is cheating. The private investigator performs surveillance work to collate evidence such as through photography to catch the cheating spouse in the act. They must then present the evidence to the spouse who hired you.

There are other tasks that the private investigator is hired to perform. It is a skilled profession but although not glamorous, there is job satisfaction when you have successfully solved the problems you were hired to solve. To become successful as a private investigator, ideally you must have come from a suitable background, for example if you were a cop.

** Please note that the above is my original work only. No other sources has been used. I have a family member who is an ex cop and is now a private investigator. I wrote this article based on his experiences only.
