The role of an Executive Vice President for student government is an important job and role on a college campus. My previous articles mentioned the job functions of the financial, cultural, programming, academic and presidential positions that form the executive board of student government. In this article, I will explain the role and function of the Vice President on the student government board and why the position is vital to student life on the campus.

The Vice President is responsible for overseeing student groups on the college campus. This may sound relatively simple but it is anything but easy when you take into account the fact that there are over 100 student organizations on most college campus. The large amount of student organizations makes the job of the Vice President that much more difficult. The job of overseeing the Vice President involves making sure that school regulations are followed. Every student organization must have a working bylaws or constitution on file with the Student Government body which governs each student organization. Every couple of years, these bylaws need to be updated and it is the job of the Vice President to work with student organizations in improving their bylaws.

In addition, when student organizations create programs that they host on the college campus, the Vice President is responsible for working with the student organizations to make their programs a success. If there are any questions on how to bring a speaker to campus or if there is a certain school regulation that a student organization is unsure of like a food policy, the student organization asks the Vice President for advice on the matter.

In many schools there is an awards banquet for student organizations at the end of the year and the Vice President works with administrators and student organizations in setting up this event.

The Vice President also helps the President of the Student Government in any complicated or big projects on campus that affects students. For example, if new classrooms are being built or a construction project is being done to give more student organizations program or office space, the Vice President will be involved in this decision process.

The Vice President is often the face of the student government because the president is busy dealing with the administration and doesn't meet with students as often.

The Vice President can often be seen by students at student programs and events and anytime there is a big guest speaker or concert, the Vice President has a role in making the event a success.
