John B. Wornall, a former Kentucky native moved to Kansas City and built a Greek Revival styled home in 1858. It was the talk of the town and a thing of beauty. It is located in the prestigious Brookside neighborhood at 6115 Wornall Rd.
It has been painstakingly restored to reflect that time period's furnishings.
Guided tours allow visitors to get a glimpse of what everyday life was like for a well-to-do family before the Civil War. Throughout the year there are children's classes, adult workshops, exhibits and Civil War presentations. One popular event is their Christmas Tours.
This home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To get on this list is no small feat.
One thing of special interest is the herb and perennial gardens on the premise. While visiting there one day for a tour they utilized these herbs for a meal they were preparing.
Employees are dressed in period garb to give you a better appreciation of this time in our history. They politely answered questions from visitors and history buffs.
They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10-4; Sunday 1-4. They are closed on major holidays. Admission is $6.00 for adults; $5.00 for seniors and students; children 5 and under are free. You might be interested in special rates for groups with advanced reservations. The phone number is 816-444-1858 and their website is www.wornallhouse.org.
I found it a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. You might just too!
